Kecskemet vs Riga: Visitors looking to starve Hungarians of goals
Kecskemet will make their second appearance in European competition following an eleven-year wait. Earned after a surprising second-place finish in the Hungarian top flight last season immediately after gaining promotion in the prior campaign.
KTE drew both games in being eliminated by Kazakh side Aktobe on away goals in the 2011/12 Europa League. With the Nemzeti Bajnokság yet to get underway this term, István Szabó’s side have only had friendlies to prepare themselves for this tie.
In contrast, Riga are competing in European competition for a sixth successive season, although they have failed to make it past the qualifying rounds on each occasion. The Latvians are also 23 games into their current domestic campaign and, due to a 2nd-placed finish in the Optibet Virsliga last term, have already played one qualifying round in this competition.
Progress was secured courtesy of a 2-1 aggregate victory over Vikingur Reykjavik. Winning the first leg 2-0 at home, with a 1-0 defeat in the return leg in Iceland.
The home side have won each of their last five pre-season games, keeping a clean sheet in four. In comparison, Riga have lost their last two away European qualifiers without scoring but have kept five clean sheets in their last eight European qualifiers. They have won four of their previous five games in all competitions. However, importantly our selection here has landed in all of them.
Besiktas vs Tirana: Expect Turkish delight in Istanbul
Besiktas will be making their first-ever appearance in the Europa Conference League here. However, the Turkish side are European competition warhorses, having played in a total of 224 ties, including 83 in the Champions League/European Cup.
A third place Süper Lig finish last season sees Şenol Güneş’ side enter the tournament at this stage. They have sharpened themselves up for this match with two pre-season victories, scoring six goals while conceding just once in defeats of Strasbourg and Mezokovesd-Zsory.
Tirana earned this trip to Vodafone Park the hard way, drawing the home leg against Dinamo Batumi in the first qualifying round before winning 2-1 in Georgia.
Although last season’s 15-goal top scorer Cenk Tosun is sidelined with a muscle injury until next month, the Black Eagles still have plenty of firepower at their disposal. Vincent Aboubakar hit the back of the net 13 times last term, warming up for this clash by scoring three times in the aforementioned two friendlies, including both goals against Strasbourg.
The home side are warm favourites, and rightly so, and I feel they will want to put the tie out of reach on home soil. They scored at least three goals in each of their last six Süper Lig outings, netting 21 goals in total.
The likes of Galatasaray, who were included in that run, have more quality than the Albanian visitors.
Club Brugge vs AGF Aarhus: Club Brugge taken to leave visitors Black and Blue with first leg win
A lowest finishing position since 2011 of 4th sees Club Brugge grace the Europa Conference League for the first time. Blauw-Zwart got to the Round of 16 in the Champions League last season before elimination at the hands of Benfica. A 7-1 aggregate drubbing cost Scott Parker his job.
The 2020/21 campaign saw them draw with the mighty PSG and beat RB Leipzig before failing to qualify from a group which also contained Manchester City.
The Belgian Pro League season only ended last month, with interim coach Rik De Mil overseeing things. However ex-Celtic manager Ronny Deila is now in charge, and this will be his first competitive match.
Aarhus opened the new Superliga campaign with a 1-0 victory on Saturday. The Danes are now back in European action following a 3rd placed finish last season.
Although a few big names have left the Belgian side over the last couple of seasons, Hans Vanaken, a recent target for Premier League clubs, remains. Deila will be determined to get his tenure off to a winning start and in style to show his new fans there will be no repeat of last season’s woes. He has enough talent at his disposal to be able to do just that.
