Euro 2021 Betting Value Report Cards

Euro 2021 is a buffet for punters with so many markets to bet on. But the sheer variety can be daunting. Perhaps you haven’t been following North Macedonia in the UEFA Nations League C2. Maybe you don’t know how Kasper Hjulmand has handled his first year as Denmark manager. If you haven’t been paying the closest attention, then this guide is for you.

We wanted to try something different for this Euro 2021 betting preview. We want to give punters enough knowledge to cut through the endless stats pages and tournament previews.

That’s why we’ve made our Euro 2021 Betting Value Report Cards.

How Our Euro 2021 Betting Value Report Cards Work

The concept is simple. We give all 24 Euro teams a grade based on how much betting value we believe the punter can take advantage of by betting on that nation in the group matches or outright markets. Grades are issued from A to F with the odd + and – thrown into the mix.

Like a stressed schoolteacher, we’ve done exhaustive research to make the final grades. Instead of coursework and mock exams, we utilised dozens of data sources and the input of an actual physicist (for some of the math, not the aerodynamics of a football in flight).

Considering Euro 2021 Odds

We’ve considered the 1X2 odds for each of the 24 teams in their group stage matches as well as progression to the later stages. We compared bookmaker odds and their implied probabilities with our expectations and found value wherever possible.

We found a loose relationship between qualification and the individual match odds. A tally of four points is usually enough to get to the next stage of the competition. That was the case in Euro 2016. Some teams are worth betting on in individual matches while others are better to back in outright markets.

It’s All About Value

To reiterate, this is not a typical power ranking. We are not ordering the 24 sides based on how well they’ll perform at Euro 2021. We can’t predict the future but we can help punters find betting value.

All odds collected are the best available as of 9 June 2021.

So without any further delay, here are our Euro 2021 Betting Value Report Cards.

The A Grades

Italy: A+

Italy are top of the class. Roberto Mancini’s men are the form team in Europe coming into this tournament. They had the best qualifying campaign of any side with 10 wins and 37 goals. Mancini’s men haven’t lost any of their last 25 matches, winning 20 of them. They’ve had some excellent results and look set to impress.

It’s a new-look side. A new generation of players has emerged that is stacked with quality. Nicolo Barella, Marco Verratti and Jorginho form an excellent midfield. They have some solid new defenders and flair upfront.

The Azzurri are out at odds 9.0 (odds of 12.0 at time of writing) to win their first major title since 2006. That feels generous considering the draw. They’ll play Wales, Turkey and Switzerland all on home soil. The bookies give them a 24.45% chance of winning all three matches. That is despite the fact that their opponents will be making regular trips between Italy and Azerbaijan to play their matches.

Top the group and they’ll likely face one of Ukraine or Austria in the round-of-16. Get through that and it’s a winnable quarter-final against Belgium. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Italy reached the latter stages here. The squad is ready to impress and the odds give them value.

Italy’s Betting Value Grade: A+

This is the best squad they’ve had in well over a decade and a reasonable draw to match. Italy have one of the most experienced managers in the competition and a quality squad. They’re flying under the radar with the bookies despite their wonderful form in recent years. The Azzurri look a solid bet to at least make the semis.

Netherlands: A

The Netherlands are an outside pick at Euro 2021. They have the kindest draw of any top seed team. They’ll face Ukraine, Austria and North Macedonia in Group C which should mean three wins.

The bookies have given them a 29.87% chance of earning maximum points. That looks good value and so do their chances of topping the group. They’re 1.56 to win Group C which seems very generous.

The Netherlands should provide value further into the tournament. Top group C and they’ll face a third-placed side in the round-of-16. Win that and they’ll face a group runner-up in the quarter-finals. On paper, that’s the easiest draw in the competition. It won’t be a surprise if the Netherlands reach the final four of this competition.

Netherlands Betting Value Grade: A

They’ve got a better side than most and the easiest pathway in the competition. Back the Netherlands to win all three group matches and to go far.

Belgium: A

Belgium are amongst the favourites to win this competition. Roberto Martinez’s men have an 11.76% chance of going all the way and lifting the first major honour in their history.

They’ve got a good draw. They’re in Group B alongside Denmark, Russia and Finland. Top the table and they’ll take on a side that finished third in their group. That’s a lot easier than some of the other favourites in this competition like England and France.

They met Les Bleus back in the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. France won 1-0 and perhaps things would be different at this tournament had the Red Devils come out on top.

Belgium are worth backing throughout. The bookies give them a 21.33% chance of winning all three group stage matches. That seems generous given the opposition. Key players had excellent domestic seasons and look set to impress.

Belgium Betting Value Grade: A

They’re well behind France in the odds but were unfortunate to lose to Deschamps’ men in 2018. Belgium have an easier pathway in this competition. They’re worth backing to win all three group matches and to go far at Euro 2021.

Turkey: A-

Turkey are this competition’s dark horses. They’re looking to upset the odds after an eye-catching qualifying campaign. Turkey have a 59.88% chance of qualifying from Group A which seems a little low.

Defence wins titles. They only conceded three goals in qualifying, the lowest number of any side. Their main rivals for the runners-up spot behind Italy are Wales and Switzerland. The latter two struggle for goals and their attack could fall flat against this defence. Cagalar Soyuncu and Merih Demiral form a fine partnership in their backline.

The bookmakers give them a 16.88% chance of winning two of their group stage matches. That has considerable value. Finish runners-up and they’ll likely face Denmark in the round-of-16 and the Netherlands in the quarters. It’s 9.00 for Turkey to reach the semi-finals which has value.

Turkey Betting Value Grade: A-

Defensive solidity is vital at major tournaments. Back Turkey to get out of Group A and to go far in this competition. 9.00 for them to make the final four represents good value.

The B Grades

Croatia: B+

The bookmakers class Croatia as a mid-tier side despite finishing runners-up at the 2018 World Cup. This squad’s key players are ageing but star man Luka Modric had a fine season.

They’ve got a good draw. Croatia are in Group D along with England, Scotland and the Czech Republic. England are the big favourites on home soil but Croatia will look kindly on second place.

The runner-up in Group D will have an easier draw than the winner. If England top the group then they’ll likely take on one of France, Germany or Portugal in the round-of-16. Should Croatia finish runners-up then they’ll likely take on Sweden or Poland.

The bookies have given Croatia a 38.76% chance of reaching the quarter-finals but that seems low.

Croatia Betting Value Grade: B+

Punters can find good value with Croatia. Back them to beat Scotland and the Czech Republic and to qualify for the next stage. They should get past their opponents in the last 16 and reach the quarters.

Spain: B

Spain are the fourth-favourites to win this competition alongside Germany. They have value considering the draw for Luis Enrique’s side. They have the second-kindest draw of a top seed side behind the Netherlands. Group E sees the Spanish come up against Sweden, Poland and Slovakia. They should have no problem topping the group which gives value to their odds of 1.40.

The group winners take on a third-placed side first before a tougher fixture in the quarters. Spain haven’t impressed in the last couple of major tournaments but this looks like a more settled squad. Manager Luis Enrique has made some bold selection decisions but that adds pressure.

The lack of firepower may hurt them in the latter stages but they have a reasonable route to the last eight.

Spain Betting Value Grade: B

They should breeze out of their group. The bookies have them at 2.88 to win all three of their Group E fixtures. They look a solid bet for the quarters.

France: B

The tournament favourites are well down this list. France are the 2018 World Cup champions and with that comes expectation. The bookies have given them a 16.13% chance of lifting the title and a 26.67% chance of reaching the final. Those are short odds for a side with such a difficult draw.

France need points from Germany, Portugal and Hungary in Group F. Only one of those sides can top the group and a harder route awaits the rest. The runners-up in Group F will likely take on England in the round-of-16 and Spain in the quarters. That’s a tough path that France could go down.

The bookies have given them a 88.50% chance of qualifying and a 38.17% chance of topping the group. Those figures seem high considering how difficult it will be for them.

The group winner odds for Group F are the lowest of any in the competition. The average implied percentage for the four teams to win Group F is 23.98%. For all but one of the other groups, it is above 25% as that figure includes bookmaker margins.

That shows that the bookies are unsure about which team will top this group. That puts a big question mark next to these three top sides.

France Betting Value Grade: B

They have the best squad in the competition by some distance. France deserve their place as favourites and are the likeliest side to lift the title in July. Still, they have a difficult path to the final and their odds are shorter than they should be.

Portugal: B-

The holders, Portugal are well down this list for the same reason as their Group F rivals. They’ll play two of the competition favourites within the opening week.

Portugal are ahead of Germany largely down to the odds. The bookies have given them an 10% implied probability of going all the way. That would make them the second nation to lift consecutive European Championship titles.

That seems harsh considering the quality in this squad. Portugal have improved in recent years and their team is only improving. Ruben Dias, Bruno Fernandes and Joao Cancelo have all enjoyed excellent seasons for their clubs. They’re an improving squad that has secured some impressive results in recent months. It’s hard to replicate a tournament win but they have a better chance than their odds suggest.

Portugal Betting Value Ranking: B-

The bookies don’t know which direction to lean with Portugal. If they get out of the group then they’re worth backing to the later stages but it’s a big if.

Germany: B-

Germany are the slight favourites in Group F. Joachim Low has a difficult draw for his final major tournament as head coach. They’ve reached the semi-finals in six of their last seven major tournaments. They haven’t won this competition for 25 years and another title would be the perfect way for Low to sign off.

The bookies give them a 10% chance of doing it. The draw hurts their chances. They’ll face holders Portugal and World Cup champions France in the first week of the tournament. The bookies think it’s likelier that they’ll head home before the knockout stage than lift the trophy.

Germany have value for several reasons. Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, they’re Germany. They’ve won 28 of their last 37 matches at major tournaments. The bookies give them an 11.40% chance of winning all three group games. It feels a lot likelier than that despite their recent troubles. History is on their side.

Germany Betting Value Grade: B-

Some bookmakers make them the favourites to win Group F but most expect a knockout stage exit. Germany are usually excellent at major tournaments but this squad lacks quality in key areas.

The C Grades

Wales: C+

Wales have the unenviable task of trying to repeat their success of 2016. They made it all the way to the semi-finals in their first major tournament for half a century. Gareth Bale and co will now aim to replicate that but they’ve got a tricky draw in Group A. Italy, Turkey and Switzerland complete a competitive group.

But the Welsh have a good chance of sneaking into the next stage. They had one of the best defensive records in qualifying and some quality players in attack. The Red Dragons have a 50% chance of qualifying for the knockout stage but there is better value elsewhere.

Back Wales in their matches against Turkey and especially against Switzerland. They have an implied probability of 37.22% of earning four points. That’s a 12.77% gap between their chance of qualifying and earning the four points it will take to get there.

Wales Betting Value Grade: C+

They’re worth backing in matches against Switzerland and Turkey but not much further.

Slovakia: C+

Slovakia have some betting value here. They’re stuck in Group E alongside Sweden, Poland and the favourites, Spain. We aren’t expecting them to topple Luis Enrique’s men and win the group. Neither are the bookies who have given them a 6.67% chance of doing that.

Slovakia’s value comes from their first two group matches. They face Poland and Sweden in St. Petersburg in the space of five days. Those two sides have to travel to Seville to take on Spain when they aren’t in Russia.

That may give Slovakia the edge. They reached the knockout stage in the only other two major tournaments they played in. They beat some good sides to get here and will threaten both Sweden and Poland in Group E. The bookies give them a 37.04% chance of qualifying but a 20.21% chance of earning at least four points.

Slovakia Betting Value Grade: C+

They have a better chance of qualifying than the odds suggest. Slovakia usually win at least one match in a major tournament. Back them in their matches against Sweden and Poland for the best return.

North Macedonia: C+

North Macedonia are the lowest-ranked side in the competition. They are 62nd in the world rankings and the massive outsiders in this tournament. Group C has them up against the Netherlands, Austria and Ukraine. Those three sides have performed well in previous tournaments. There aren’t many household names in this team. Captain and topscorer Goran Pandev is their biggest threat.

The reason there is more value in backing North Macedonia is because of how long their odds are. They are massive outsiders in Group C with odds of 7.00 and 6.80 to beat Austria and Ukraine. This is a North Macedonia side that beat Germany 2-1 in their most recent competitive match.

North Macedonia Betting Value Grade: C+

There is a surprise team at every major tournament. They’re a decent side and have a much better chance of progression than the odds suggest. North Macedonia are worth backing against Austria and Ukraine.

Finland: C

Finland have a tough draw in their first major tournament appearance. They’re in Group B alongside Belgium, Denmark and Russia. Still, they are an intriguing prospect to the bettor. Finland are massive underdogs in all three of their matches.

The bookies give them a 28.57% chance of qualifying from Group B. Their chances will come down to the grudge match with Russia. The odds give them a 17.24% likelihood of snatching the three points. That’s possible considering Finland’s results in recent months. They beat France 2-0 back in November 2020.

Finland Betting Value Grade: C

Back them to beat Russia or at least a narrow defeat with a handicap. After that, there’s less hope.

Scotland: C

Scotland are outsiders as one of the lowest-ranked nations in the competition. Expectations are subjective but progression to the knockout stage is the aim. A couple of good results will be enough for Scotland.

Their chances rest on their matches against Croatia and the Czech Republic. The latter is far more winnable than the former. If you’re backing Steve Clarke’s men then do so in those matches. The bookies give them a 42.02% chance of qualifying but a 30.09% of earning four points.

The best value is backing Scotland in their match against the Czech Republic. The Scots beat them twice towards the end of 2020. It wouldn’t be a surprise if they had the edge again.

Scotland Betting Value Grade: C

The England match will grab the headlines but Scotland’s fixture with the Czech Republic is more important. They’ll play on home soil against a side they beat twice last year. Back them to beat the Czech Republic and qualify but an early knockout exit is inevitable.

Austria: C-

There’s not much between the sides in Group C. Austria and Ukraine are the Netherlands’ biggest challengers in the group. North Macedonia complete the four but they are massive outsiders.

Austria have more value than their group rivals for a couple of reasons. They’re higher in the FIFA rankings than Ukraine and have had a better few months. They’ve shown good form in the last 12 months with a series of wins in the Nations League.

Austria’s chance of qualifying will rest on their match with Ukraine. They’re the outsiders in this tight contest which gives them the edge in betting value.

Austria Betting Value Grade: C-

Progression to the knockout stage is likely but they won’t get much further. Back them to beat Ukraine to second spot.

Denmark: C-

You won’t find much value betting on Denmark. The Danes have a fine squad of players and a decent draw in the competition. They’ll likely compete with Russia and new-boys Finland for second place and win it comfortably.

Denmark have an 81.97% chance of qualifying with the bookies which feels about right. Denmark are worth backing to reach the knockout round at 1.22. You’ll also find value in their matches. They’ve got a 37.88% chance of winning at least two of their three group games.

Denmark Betting Value Ranking: C-

Back them to beat Russia and Finland and to qualify for the knockout stage. It’s 2.25 for them to exit during the round of 16.

The D Grades

Ukraine: D

Ukraine are the second-favourites in Group C behind the Netherlands. They’re ahead of Austria and some distance from North Macedonia. They were solid in qualifying and have quality in midfield.

That gives them the edge on the pitch but not when it comes to betting value. Ukraine’s chances of progression depend on that showdown match with Austria. They may well win that but it’s unlikely they’ll get much further. The runners-up in Group C will take on the winners of Group A. That will likely be Italy which makes for a tough match.

Qualification isn’t as assured as the odds suggest. It will be tough for Ukraine and the odds offer less value as a result.

Poland: D

Data and football influences these report cards. There isn’t much to separate Sweden and Poland in the rankings but there may be on the pitch. Poland hope to replicate their quarter-final appearance in 2016. Injuries have hurt the squad but not their chances of success.

Poland are ahead of Sweden in the odds. They have a 68.03% implied probability of progression and a 62.35% chance of getting four points. That’s likelier than the Swedes but Poland carry more value.

The bookies have them as outsiders for their crucial match against Sweden. On the pitch, the sides are a lot closer which gives the edge to Robert Lewandowski and co.

Poland get the nod ahead of their group rivals. They are worth backing against Sweden in their crucial match.

Sweden: D

Group E is an interesting one. Spain are the massive favourites to win all three matches but there isn’t much separating the rest. Sweden, Poland, and Slovakia complete the group. Sweden are the highest-ranked side and the favourites for second spot. That gives them less value in what will be some tight matches.

There’s very little to separate Sweden from their group rivals, Poland. The bookies give Sweden a 64.94% chance of progression and a 68.03% chance to Poland. History works against the side in yellow. They’ve failed to make it out of the group stage in each of the last three European Championships.

Sweden Betting Value Grade: D

Group E is tight after Spain. Sweden are behind Poland in the qualifying odds but ahead of them in the match odds. That gives the edge in value to Lewandowski and co.

Czech Republic: D

The Czech Republic don’t carry much value in this competition. They’ll aim for the knockout round but it will be difficult for them. They’ve only made it out of the group stage at a major tournament once since 2005.

The draw is tough alongside England and Croatia. The two nations met in the semi-finals of the previous World Cup in Russia. Czech hope rests on that Scotland match. They are the favourites on the night but it will be tough. Hampden Park is the setting and Scotland beat them twice last year.

England: D-

England don’t carry much value at Euro 2021. Gareth Southgate’s men are amongst the favourites to go all the way in this competition. The bookies price them at 7.50 which gives England a 14.29% chance of winning the tournament. That seems low given their run of fixtures. They should top Group D and qualify for the round-of-16. There they should meet one of France, Germany or Portugal.

They carry little value in their group stage matches. England have a 97.09% chance of qualifying for the next stage. That’s the highest of any side and carries little value. The longest odds they have in a match is their opener against Croatia. They’re the 1.80 favourites for the clash with an implied probability of 55.56%. With low odds across the board, England don’t carry much value to the punter.

England Betting Value Grade: D-

Many England fans are betting with their hearts and not their heads. The bookies have slashed their odds and the result is low value. The Three Lions have low odds in the groups and a tough route to the final in the knockout stage. Only two nations have a higher implied probability of exiting in the round of 16. They may do well this tournament but there’s not much value for punters backing Southgate’s men.

Switzerland: D-

Switzerland are the second-favourites in Group A after a solid qualifying campaign. They’ve got a promising squad that has enjoyed some good results in recent years. Switzerland have a tough group. They’ll face Italy in Rome and will travel all the way to Baku to take on Turkey and Wales.

The Swiss have low value for a couple of reasons. On the pitch, they’ll face three of the best defensive sides in the competition. The once-lethal Xherdan Shaqiri has found the net once in three years for his national side. It’s symptomatic of a Switzerland side that struggles to score goals.

Their odds provide little value. Switzerland have a 66.27% chance of earning four points and a 63.69% chance of qualifying. That’s the closest those two numbers are for any side in the competition. That provides low value.

They aren’t a bad team and may well progress from Group A. Still, the odds flatter Switzerland and a group-stage exit isn’t impossible.

The E Grades

Russia: E

There isn’t much value backing Russia. They made it to the quarter-finals at the 2018 World Cup but it will be hard to replicate.

Their match against Finland is winnable but Russia are the big favourites. It’s 1.73 for them to win that one which would give them a great chance of progression. Those odds are short considering Russia haven’t won any of their last five matches at the Euros.

Russia may well beat Finland and secure enough points to reach the next stage. The odds suggest as much but a round-of-16 exit seems inevitable given the draw.

That 2018 World Cup quarter-final appearance still lingers in the memory. They have a tougher group this time and an early exit seems likely.

The F Grades

Hungary: F

Back the outsiders? Not when they’re this far outside. There are lower-ranked sides in this competition than Hungary but none have a tougher set of fixtures. They are out at 6.00 to get out of Group F which is massive in this 24-team format. The Euro 2021 group of death features Germany, France and Portugal. The winners of the last three major tournaments.

Hungary have an implied probability of 16.67% to qualify from Group F. Their 35.53% likelihood of losing all three group games dwarfs that figure. Statistical probability gives them a 25.40% chance of winning one of their three group matches. Footballing likelihood has that number a lot lower.

Hungary Betting Value Grade: F

It’s hard to find any value. They’re 2.62 to lose all three matches and 5.5 to qualify for the knockout stage. Neither bet is worth it.
