It’s a new era for the Netherlands. They’re back after failing to qualify for two consecutive major tournaments. Manager Frank De Boer leads a new generation of players stacked with quality. They’re far from the favourites but they have a good draw. It won’t be a surprise if the Netherlands reach the later stages of this competition.

Netherlands Euro 2021 Group C Fixtures

The Netherlands have a reasonable draw in Group C. They were the top seed and one of the host nations. That means they’ll play all three of their group matches on home soil at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

The Netherlands face Ukraine in their first group stage fixture and they’ll be a test. Ukraine finished above Portugal in Qualifying Group B so don’t underestimate them. Austria and North Macedonia complete the group. Both nations got through Qualifying Group G. North Macedonia took the long route after making it through the playoffs.

Netherlands Euro 2021 Qualification & Form

The Netherlands came through Qualifying Group C to get here. The Dutch side finished second in the group behind Germany but there wasn’t much between them. Oranje won six of their eight matches, drawing one and losing one. They finished two points behind Germany after a disappointing draw with Northern Ireland.

But there was a lot to be positive about for the Netherlands. September 2019 was the high point of their qualifying campaign. The Netherlands beat Germany 4-2 in Hamburg. It was the first time that Germany had lost a qualifying match at home since 2010.

But the Netherlands’ form has dipped. They’ve struggled in the UEFA Nations League and lost a friendly match against Mexico. The Netherlands have started slowly in their 2022 World Cup qualification campaign. Oranje are playing catch-up after losing the crucial opening match against Turkey.

Netherlands Euro 2021 Squad & Manager

Manager: Frank De Boer

Defenders: Joel Veltman, Matthijs de Ligt, Nathan Ake, Owen Wijndal, Stefan de Vrij, Patrick van Aanholt, Daley Blind, Denzel Dumfries, Jurrien Timber

Midfielders: Georginio Wijnaldum, Davy Klaassen, Marten de Roon, Ryan Gravenberch, Frenkie de Jong, Teun Koopmeiners

Attackers: Steven Berghuis, Luuk de Jong, Memphis Depay, Quincy Promes, Donyell Malen, Wout Weghorst, Cody Gakpo

Things were looking up for the Netherlands after a period of stagnation. Ronald Koeman arrived in 2018 and oversaw a major turnaround in Oranje’s fortunes. He embedded through this new generation of players that all but secured qualification. Koeman departed the national team for FC Barcelona in September 2020.

It’s been a difficult period for manager Frank de Boer. The former Crystal Palace and Ajax boss has had mixed success for his national team. The Netherlands didn’t win any of their first four matches under de Boer.

Results have improved but the schedule has favoured them. They’ve secured testing victories against Poland and Bosnia & Herzegovina in recent months.

Injuries have hit the Netherlands hard. Virgil Van Dijk’s ruptured knee ligament chief amongst them. The Liverpool man will miss the tournament, as will Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.

But this squad has plenty of options for de Boer. Matthijs de Ligt, Stefan de Vrij and Daley Blind provide variety and experience in defence. Georginio Wijnaldum and Frenkie De Jong form a fine partnership in midfield. Memphis Depay and Donyell Malen offer flair upfront.

Goals are the only issue. This Netherlands side doesn’t boast a forward on par with some of the names of the past. 37.5% of the goals they scored in qualifying came in the two matches against Estonia.

Georginio Wijnaldum has become this side’s biggest goal threat. He bagged eight goals and has captained the side in Van Dijk’s absence.

Netherlands Euro History

Goals are a longstanding issue for Oranje. It was once an area in which they flourished. The Dutch bagged an average of 3.7 goals per match when qualifying for Euro 2012. That dropped to 1.7 when they failed to make it to Euro 2016. For the 2020 tournament, that number went up to 3.00 per match.

There have been some defensive problems in Van Dijk’s absence. They’ve kept two clean sheets since the Liverpool man damaged his knee. They came against Latvia and Gibraltar – two sides well into the triple-digits of the FIFA rankings. Oranje kept four clean sheets in the eight matches before Van Dijk’s injury.

Netherlands Past Performance at European Championship:

  • 1996: Quarter-Finals
  • 2000: Third Place
  • 2004: Third Place
  • 2008: Quarter-Finals
  • 2012: Group Stage
  • 2016: DNQ

This all means that they may be an entertaining side to watch. There was an average of 3.88 total match goals in qualifying. 75% of their games had at least 3.5 total goals. That was amongst the highest of any nation.

Netherlands Euro 2021 Odds

The bookies are expecting the Netherlands to do well. Frank De Boer’s men are hardly the favourites but are available at 15.0 to lift the trophy. That puts them roughly level with Italy and Portugal in the standings.

The Dutch have a history of reaching the later stages. They’ve made it to the semi-finals in five of the nine European Championships they’ve appeared in. They’re at odds of 6.50 to reach the final in what could be a favourable draw for them.

Group C is very much in their favour. It’s no surprise to see they are the massive favourites to reach the knockout stage. They’re 1.04 to qualify or 1.37 to top Group C. The latter has far more value than the former. All odds are correct as of 8 June and the best available.

Netherlands Euro 2021 Prediction

The Netherlands are an unpredictable side but the draw will give them hope. Oranje hould top Group C to progress to the round-of-16. That will give them a reasonable tie against a side that finished in 3rd. The draw for the quarter-finals has also gone in their favour.

The Netherlands tend to impress at the European Championship. They’ve made it to the final in five of the eight tournaments they’ve played in. They’ll breeze into the knockout stage where they’re due to meet a third-placed team. A tough draw will expose their shortcomings but a better path will see them progress. After that, the lack of a top-quality striker will count against them.

Netherlands Euro 2021 Prediction: Win Group C but get knocked out in the quarter-finals.
