After an abysmal 2018 World Cup campaign, Euro 2021 provides Germany an opportunity to regain their status among the world’s best.

This will be Joachim Low’s final competition as the head of the German national squad. That makes it the perfect opportunity to finish this story with a surprising turnaround and cement his legacy with another piece of silverware.

Germany Euro 2021 Group F Fixtures

Group F will likely be the most entertaining to watch in the upcoming Euros, with Germany, France and Portugal facing off against each other. Portugal are the 2016 Euro defending champions, whilst France are the 2018 World Cup champions. One of these three teams might very well end up out of the tournament sooner than they would have liked.

Germany’s first match will have them crossing swords with France in Munich. They are looking forward to making use of their home advantage and starting their campaign on  the right track.

They will enjoy not having to travel during the group stage, with their second match against Portugal also being played in Munich. This might end up being the most important match for them. If they lose to France in the opener, a victory here will be necessary if they hope to qualify to the knockout stage.

Their final match in the group stage will feature them hosting Hungary on June 23.

Germany Euro 2021 Fixtures: & Tips

Germany Euro 2021 Qualification & Form

Germany performed well in qualifying for this year’s Euros and finished top of group C in the qualifiers. They won seven of their eight matches and only lost one. Their only loss came against the Netherlands with a 2:4 result. But that didn’t falter their confidence and they went on to win their next three matches.

Their most impressive match was a 8:0 beatdown against Estonia. Their rematch ended in a 3:0 result in favor of Germany for an aggregate result of 11:0.

Germany scored a whopping 30 goals and conceded 7 in their qualifier matches for an average of 3,75 for and 0,88 against.

They kept five clean sheets in those matches and 75% of their matches went over 2,5 total goals.

Their last three matches in the World Cup qualifiers left fans confused. After defeating Iceland and Romania, Germany lost their most recent match against North Macedonia with a 1:2 result. They sit in third place on the Group J standings and a major improvement is needed if they are to make an impact in the World Cup.

Germany Euro 2021 Squad & Manager

Manager: Joachim Low

Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer, Bernd Leno, Kevin Trapp

Defense: Emre Can, Matthias Ginter, Robin Gosens, Christian Günter, Marcel Halstenberg, Mats Hummels, Lukas Klostermann, Robin Koch, Antonio Rüdiger, Niklas Süle

Midfield: Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, İlkay Gündoğan, Jonas Hofmann, Joshua Kimmich, Toni Kroos, Jamal Musiala, Florian Neuhaus, Leroy Sané

Forwards: Kai Havertz, Thomas Müller, Kevin Volland, Timo Werner

Joachim Low has enjoyed almost 15 years as the manager for the German national football team. He started his national team stint in 2004 as an assistant coach, but was promoted to head coach in 2016.

His time as manager has seen great success. He led the German team to the 2014 World Cup and also the 2017 Confederations Cup title. They were also the runners-up in the 2008 European Championship.

With an estimated market value of 942 million euros, Germany will have one of the most expensive squads in the Euros. That said, their defense hasn’t played up to their value in recent matches.

Conceding six goals against Spain in November 2020 was a huge red flag for Low and a sign that something was terribly wrong. None of the substitutes made much of a difference as Spain continued to dominate the match with 23 shots, whilst Germany had just 2.

Regardless of how their defense performs, it’s their attack that will have to do the heavy hitting and provide lots of opportunities for Werner and Gnabry.

Low has a wide range of troops to choose from at midfield, and perhaps it is time to give his young superstars in Musiala or Wirtz an opportunity to shine.

A lot of pressure will certainly be on Timo Werner to perform well. He hasn’t been in the best of form recently and he needs to be a threat for opposing defenses if Germany hope to have a potent attack.

Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels are making a return for Low’s last competition as manager. But the question remains whether they can actually help this team at this time, or if they will make an even bigger mess.

Germany Euro History

Germany were one of the best teams in their Euro qualifier matches, scoring 30 and conceding seven goals in eight matches.

Recently, their play dropped significantly in the UEFA Nations League. They only managed to win two of their six matches and both of their victories came against Ukraine. The most painful match was coincidentally their only defeat so far, and it was the mentioned 0:6 debacle against Spain.

Germany scored 10 and conceded 13 goals in their Nations League matches for disappointing  averages of 1,67 for and 2,17 against.

As the manager for the German national squad, Joachim Low has coached 192 matches and won 122. 38 of his matches ended in a draw and just 32 were defeats.

Germany’s recent finishes at the European Championship:

  • 1996: Champions
  • 2000: Group Stage
  • 2004: Group Stage
  • 2008: Runners up
  • 2012: Semi Finals
  • 2016: Semi Finals

Germany Euro 2021 Odds

The bookmakers still have faith in Low and Germany. They are given 8,00 odds to win the tournament. They are also given 2,25 odds of taking the group along with 1,08 of qualifying into the knockout phase.

This will prove to be a more difficult task than the numbers suggest, with Germany being in the same group as Portugal and France. They will have to make a significant improvement from what they have been doing recently.

Timo Werner is valued at 26,00 odds to be the top goalscorer of the tournament, but this doesn’t seem very likely. With the way he has performed recently, he might not even be the top scorer of his team. Serge Gnabry has been outperforming him in the national team, and he is given 21,00 odds of accomplishing this feat.

Germany Euro 2021 Prediction

Something needs to change if Germany are to enjoy the type of success everyone expects from them at the Euros. The biggest question is whether their quality pieces will add up to what they are worth or will we see more of the same.

As it stands, Germany’s most important match will be against Portugal in the group stage. This will be their opportunity for revenge from the 2016 Euros and they will be able to secure second place in the group. This would guarantee them passage into the next round. Fighting to be one of the four teams in third place to qualify is something they want to avoid.

They have the quality to make an impact in this tournament, and all they need is a good training camp to prepare. Their defensive miscommunication should be solved within a couple of weeks with the caliber of players they have.

Germany prediction: Second in group F
