England Euro 2021 Group D Fixtures
England will play their matches in Group D alongside some familiar names. They were the top seeds and as one of the host nations, the draw is in their favour.
Croatia were the second team pulled out of the pot. That will give Gareth Southgate’s men a chance for revenge. Croatia knocked them out at the semi-final stage of the 2018 World Cup.
England have a local rivalry to look forward to in Group D. Scotland will provide stiff competition and serve as the group’s other host nation. The Czech Republic complete the group. England beat them to the top spot in Qualifying Group A.

England Euro 2021 Qualification & Form
England had a solid qualifying campaign but it wasn’t a difficult group. They got by the Czech Republic, Kosovo, Bulgaria, and Montenegro to qualify.
Gareth Southgate used qualifying to experiment with his squad. An offensive-minded England finished with an average of 5.38 total goals per match. That was the highest of any nation in qualifying.
The Three Lions bagged 37 goals in total. They won matches by a margin of five, six, and even seven goals. But it wasn’t a perfect campaign. They lost 2-1 away to the Czech Republic back in October 2019.
England have been inconsistent since qualifying for this tournament. Their 2022 World Cup qualifying record is flawless but they’ve struggled in the Nations League. They lost to Belgium and Denmark but beat the Red Devils 2-1 at Wembley in October 2020. Still, it’s been an encouraging couple of years.

England Euro 2021 Squad Analysis
England have their best squad in over a decade. The standout name is their captain and top scorer in qualifying, Harry Kane. The Spurs man has enjoyed another excellent season for his club.
But this England squad has options aplenty. Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho compete for places in the attack. John Stones and Harry Maguire will start at centre-back providing the United man is fit.
The biggest selection headache is in the midfield. Declan Rice, Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips, Mason Mount, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden are all in contention. Former England international Wayne Bridge expects a big tournament from the latter.
“Foden will be massive for England this summer,” Bridge said in an exclusive interview with bettingexpert. “He could end up being the best player in the world. He could end up being player of the tournament, he’s that good. He’s definitely going to be one of the key players for England.”
Southgate could play a deep ball-playing midfield of Rice and Phillips or allow a youthful flourish with Foden and Bellingham. Mason Mount exemplifies this ability to adapt. The Chelsea man is an integral part of this England team. Mount can play multiple roles in midfield with little drop-off in his attacking output.
The most exciting part about this England squad is the variety of players. The right-back position has been heavily discussed but it exemplifies this choice. Even without Trent Alexander-Arnold, Southgate has three quality options.
It gives Southgate more choice than any England manager since Sven-Goran Eriksson. He deserves credit for this. Southgate has personally integrated much of this squad in his five years as first-team manager and with the Under-21s before.
There’s a feeling that everything has led to this point. Southgate was on the pitch the last time the European Championship was played in England. He missed a crucial penalty that would have sealed his side’s place in the final. Southgate now helms a team with an excellent chance of taking that extra step.
England Euro History
England enjoyed another unchallenging qualification campaign. That’s been the norm in recent major tournaments. Things unravelled for them once the tournament got underway after decades of underperformance.
That is no longer the case. They have hope after a semi-final appearance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. That was their best performance at a major tournament for 25 years but some issues remain. England scored 75% of their goals from set pieces or penalties at the 2018 World Cup. It was the most that any nation had scored at a World Cup since 1966.
England Past Performance at European Championship:
- 1996: Semi-Finals
- 2000: Group Stage
- 2004: Quarter-Finals
- 2008: DNQ
- 2012: Quarter-Finals
- 2016: Round of 16
But England showed other sides of their game in qualifying. They counter-attacked against many of the deep defences they faced and it worked well. 21% of their goals in qualifying came via set pieces but 70% were from open play. The rest were own goals.
Goals have been an issue for England at major tournaments. They scored more at the 2018 World Cup than they did in the three World Cups prior. England found the net four times at Euro 2016. They should comfortably exceed that here.
England Euro 2021 Odds
England are amongst the favourites to win their first European Championship title. Gareth Southgate’s men are 6.0 to go all the way and lift the trophy at Wembley. They’re just behind France at 5.50.
As such, England are at short odds in a range of other markets. They’re 1.03 to qualify from Group D and 1.37 to top the group ahead of Croatia, Scotland, and the Czech Republic. You’ll get odds of 3.60 for England to reach the final at Wembley. It would be their first major tournament final appearance since the 1966 World Cup. The bookies fancy them to make history.

England Euro 2021 Prediction
England have stability and a wealth of options in the squad. They’re playing all their matches on home soil and many key players have enjoyed good club seasons. The stage is set for them to impress at Euro 2021 just as they did at the 2018 World Cup.
But they had a kind route to the semi-finals in Russia. There were times when Southgate’s tactics were undone and England failed to adapt. The knockout stage will be much more difficult for them this time.
Top the group and they’ll get a round-of-16 match against the runner-up from Group F. That group features France, Germany, and Portugal, the last three major tournament winners. That match will show us how good England truly are.
England Euro 2021 Prediction: Top Group D then exit in the Round of 16.
