Belgium have been building towards this tournament for some time and now this golden generation of players is at its peak. Roberto Martinez’s side are ranked number 1 in the world. The foundation is there for them to shine at this tournament.

Belgium Euro 2021 Group B Fixtures

Belgium were drawn in Group B which will be tricky for them. Denmark will be their closest competitor. They are one of the better sides in the competition and serve as a host nation. The matches will be split between Copenhagen and St. Petersburg. Russia take up the third spot and Finland round off Group B. The latter nation will make their first appearance at a major tournament.

Belgium have elected to set up camp on home soil. They’ll travel to Copenhagen to take on Denmark but their remaining two matches will be in St. Petersburg. Belgium will take some confidence from previous meetings. They have beaten both Denmark and Russia twice in the last couple of years.

Belgium Euro 2021 Qualification & Form

Belgium enjoyed an excellent qualification campaign and have been at the top of their game for some time. The Red Devils have won 42 of their 52 matches under Roberto Martinez, losing four. One of those defeats came in the 2018 World Cup semi-final as well.

So, it’s been a good few years for Belgium. They went from strength to strength after the bittersweet run to 3rd place at the 2018 World Cup. Their qualification campaign for this competition was nothing short of excellent.

Belgium won all 10 of their matches and topped Qualifying Group I. They finished above some good teams. Russia pushed down the closest and Scotland also made it out of the group. They shone in those 10 games. Belgium scored more than any other nation in qualifying and only conceded three goals. It was about as close to a perfect qualifying campaign as they could have hoped for.

Defenders: Toby Alderweireld, Thomas Vermaelen, Dedryck Boyata, Jan Vertonghen, Thomas Meunier, Jason Denayer, Leander Dendoncker, Timothy Castagne

Attackers: Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, Dries Mertens, Christian Benteke, Michy Batshuayi, Leandro Trossard, Jeremy Doku

This is the golden generation of Belgian football. For the first time in decades, Belgium have some of the best players on the planet in their starting lineup. The squad is full of quality and there are plenty of exciting options in reserve.

The stars are, of course, Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, and Eden Hazard. The former two have enjoyed some of the best seasons of their careers. De Bruyne and Lukaku have achieved remarkable personal and club success.

De Bruyne has played a starring role for Manchester City once again. If anything, it feels as if the midfielder has stepped up a level this season. The same is true of Romelu Lukaku who has fired Internazionale to their first Serie A title in over a decade. Eden Hazard has found things more difficult. Injuries and a loss of form have hurt the Real Madrid man over the last couple of years. He has improved in 2021 and will hope to lead Belgium to glory here.

There are many other stars in this team. Thibaut Courtois, Axel Witsel, Toby Alderweireld, Youri Tielemans, Dries Mertens, and Thorgan Hazard show they have quality across the pitch.

Roberto Martinez appears to have found a system that lets these players shine. The former Swansea, Wigan, and Everton boss joined in 2016. He has enjoyed five impressive years in charge. Belgium are now the established number one ranked nation on the planet. Martinez also guided them to their best-ever finish at the FIFA World Cup.

Belgium now set up in a 3-4-2-1 formation. Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Jason Denayer often make up the back three. Tielemans and Witsel provide a presence in the middle with varying options out wide.  That frees up space for De Bruyne and one other player behind Lukaku. It’s all about giving these players a system that allows them to shine.

It’s been a promising couple of years for Roberto Martinez and this Belgium team. This tournament will reveal how good they are.

Belgium Euro History

Belgium’s qualifying campaign for this tournament eclipsed their previous record. They bagged 40 goals, the highest number of any nation in qualifying. It was also the most Belgium has ever scored while qualifying for the Euros.

It’s no surprise that they have goalscorers across the pitch. 15 different players found the net for Belgium in qualifying. Romelu Lukaku led the rankings with seven.

Goals have rarely been the issue for them. Belgium were the top-scoring nation at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. They bagged 16 goals in seven matches but lost out to France in the end. The difference-maker was that Didier Deschamps’ men kept one extra clean sheet.

Belgium Past Performance at European Championship:

  • 1996: DNQ
  • 2000: Group Stage
  • 2004: DNQ
  • 2008: DNQ
  • 2012: DNQ
  • 2016: Quarter-Finals

But there is one slight worry for Roberto Martinez’s men. Belgium have had trouble keeping clean sheets with the same regularity as they did a few years ago. They’ve kept two in their last 10 matches compared to eight in the 10 games before then. That has a lot to do with the more difficult set of fixtures but it’s still worth discussing.

Belgium Euro 2021 Odds

Belgium are amongst the favourites to win this competition. BetBull have them at odds 6.50 to lift their first major title in the nation’s history. They sit alongside England and France as the big favourites. The Red Devils are also available at 3.75 to reach the final of this competition for the first time since 1980.

As such, it’s no surprise to see that they are comfortably the favourites to win their group. You’ll find odds of 1.68 for them to top Group B ahead of Belgium, Russia and Finland. That seems pretty low considering the quality in this squad. They’re 1.08 to reach the knockout stage of the competition.

Belgium Euro 2021 Prediction

It’s a crucial tournament for Belgium and for Roberto Martinez. Everything has been building towards this and they have a great chance at Euro 2020. The Red Devils have shown the kind of steady improvement that often precedes a major title. It was the quarter-finals in 2016 and third place at the 2018 World Cup. This team is ready to take the next step.

They’ve had a stable setup for several years and the results to match. Some of their key players have enjoyed excellent seasons for their clubs.

Belgium could face a tough match in the round-of-16 depending on the draw. The Red Devils then face a likely showdown against Italy in the quarters. After that, it’s anyone’s guess but Belgium have the squad to go all the way at Euro 2020.

Belgium Euro 2021 Prediction: Top Group B and make it to the semi-finals.
