Mikael Silvestre on England’s chances, Guehi’s replacement and why Saka should not play left back
Who do you think Gareth Southgate should replace Marc Guehi with him suspended for the Switzerland clash?
“Konsa is a natural replacement for Guehi. He came on against Slovakia so it makes sense to bring him in for Guehi against Switzerland. Konsa had an excellent season at Aston Villa. He should have a good game against Switzerland.”
What did you make of the decision to move Bukayo Saka to left back and could it still yet be a short term solution to Gareth Southgate’s problems
“You don’t move your right winger to left back in the middle of a massive tournament to make room for another player. It would put too much responsibility on Saka to occupy a position that isn’t his. In the game it was a good decision but to start him there wouldn’t be right for Saka, the team or Trippier. Saka has to start on the right.”
Ivan Toney proved to be very important to England’s win against Slovakia. What impressed you the most and could he play a more important role going forward?
I think Toney has done his homework on the bench and looked at the opposition and what he could bring. When you’re on the bench you have to be ready mentally and physically to see where you can have an impact.”
“He was in the right positions using his strength, his ability to create space for others. He pressed high so he did well and it’s important for teams to have guys on the bench to add value and he did.”
Does England have a team like Germany and even France, or do they just have exceptional players?
“When you look at England as a team in between tournaments with friendlies and qualifiers they haven’t been clicking and there’s a question mark on that. They’re relying on individuals to get their results but luckily they have Kane, Bellingham, Foden, Palmer and Saka who can create something but it’s too patchy. They have a lot of work to do to become a force in the tournament.”
Going by England’s fluctuating performances so far, are they still favourites against Switzerland?
“I think it’s an even game that either team can win. Switzerland are a strong team and they’re well organised. England can beat Switzerland but they need to be better. Overall, i think England will go through. They will find the key to qualify.”
Which side are we overlooking that could go on to cause an upset like Denmark at Euro 2020?
“Maybe Switzerland. They’re equipped to upset England.”
“But England knows the Swiss are dangerous. France lost to Switzerland at the last EURO. If they want an example of what the Swiss are capable of doing then that is it.”
Mikael Silvestre’s England vs Switzerland prediction: England
England vs Switzerland Prediction 1: Swiss to cause upset
Euro 2024, Quarter-finals, Saturday, July 6th, 17:00 (UK)
Gareth Southgate’s side has flattered to deceive at this European championship with a slow build-up and a concerning lack of clear style of play. He has made a nation ranked 45th in the world look like one of the best. It’s not all down to Southgate, though. Individually, players have been very poor, with only a few exceptions, like Marc Guehi, who is subsequently banned for this fixture due to a pedestrian pass by Kieran Trippier.
England seems clueless on the pitch, and Southgate is widely regarded as not the right man to lead the country. Meanwhile, with manager Murat Yakin, Switzerland has a clear plan for playing exciting attacking football with runners from deep. Yarkin said after beating Italy for the first time since 1993, “We did not only club together and defend as a unit and sit back; we showed we could attack and dominate proceedings.” Something that England has not done all tournament against far worse teams than Italy.
You can’t trust Southgate to make tactical tweaks in the game to improve the team. If anything, we usually get worse. It was clear something wasn’t right at halftime, but he waited until the 66th minute to bring on Palmer and put Saka at left-back. We only looked semi-competent when we resorted to long ball tactics, with the goal coming from a flick-on from a long throw.
Switzerland has scored seven goals in this tournament, a respectable number. What’s truly impressive is that these goals have come from Seven different players, showcasing the team’s diversity and the lack of reliance on a single player. This approach allows the team’s attacking unit to be more adaptable, with various players like Vargas, Embolo, Duah, Ndoye, and Shaqiri stepping up when needed.
This line of +0.25 would have won in two games, been a half-win in two games, and been a half-win in three out of four England games. However, I feel the Swiss will win it in 90 minutes, but a draw won’t surprise me, given that England has been so far off in recent games.
- England vs Switzerland Prediction 1: Switzerland Asian Handicap +0.25 (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.01

- Stake: 10/10
England vs Switzerland Prediction 2: Ndoye to let fly
Pre-tournament, Dan Ndoye was a bit-part player for Yakins’ side, starting just once in qualifying and averaging just 21 minutes a game across qualifying. So, his performances during this tournament have been a pleasant surprise.
He’s become a vital component of an attacking unit that has become very dangerous. The Bologna man equalled his season’s scoring for Bologna at this Euro; he averaged 55 minutes a game for the now UCL-bound side. He’s become a crucial part of the Swiss side, averaging 79 minutes per game this tournament.
Ndoye’s versatility is a significant factor in his being an important player this tournament; he has found himself in four different positions to aid the team. In the opener, he was a narrow right forward in a 3421, then a striker in a 3412, a narrow left forward in a 3421 against Germany and against Italy, he was deployed as an RWB due to Widmer’s suspension. It’s unlikely he will play that role again as Widmer is back available, and he is a far more valuable asset to the team when he’s further up the pitch.
In the past four games, Ndoye has significantly increased his shot attempts compared to his Serie A season average of 1.3 shots per game. This change in his playing style is a testament to his adaptability, with impressive totals of 3, 4, 2, and 4 shots for the Swiss forward. His increased output over recent games can’t be ignored in a side that will create chances against England.
- England vs Switzerland Prediction 2: Dan Ndoye Over 2.5 Shots
- Best Odds: 3.00
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 4/10
England vs Switzerland Prediction 3: Fouls by repeat offenders
England is a side that draws a fair amount of fouls from opponents, with Bellingham being fouled nine times across four games, Kane nine times in four games, and Saka seven times in four games. Two of these are in central areas, so lots of fouls come from opposition players in similar areas. The average of being fouled 15 times per game across the four games is a reason why I fancy two Swiss men to get a few fouls.
This Swiss team is committing an average of 11.8 fouls per game across the four games. Winning the ball back early was showcased against Italy, and at times, that can produce fouls.
Remo Freuler is part of a central midfield partnership that is purring at this tournament alongside Granit Xhaka; Freuler has a bit more licence to get about the pitch in forward areas, with Xhaka looking to run the game. Freuler’s foul numbers have been good so far, with 4, 1, 2, and 2 in the respective games, with a yellow card in the first game. I can see a similar result with the players I’ve mentioned for England that will be in and around Freuler.
Widmer at wingback has not been shy of a foul this tournament with 2, 1, and 1 in his three games, but yellows in the opener and the third game resulted in a suspension for the match vs Italy. He is a wingback who could be up against Foden or, if Southgate makes changes, any number of players who draw fouls regularly, such as Gordon.
- England vs Switzerland Prediction 3: Remo Freuler over 1.5 fouls and Silvan widmer over 0.5 fouls
- Best Odds: 2.60
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 5/10

England vs Switzerland Euro 2024 Team News and Possible Lineups: Defensive headache for Southgate
The big blow for England is the suspension of Marc Guehi, who has been a standout performer this tournament. Another issue for Southgate comes as a knock for Kieran Trippier. It is unknown if he is fit enough to start at left-back. Significant problems could arise if Trippier can’t start even though he has not been particularly great; there aren’t many standout options, with Luke Shaw clearly not fit enough, or he would have come on vs Slovenia. This means Southgate could shift Walker to the left and play Trent Alexander Arnold at the right back. I expect Southgate to stay pretty much the same in attacking areas. He is the only one to deviate from what he thinks is right if he is forced to do so.
Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka has been declared fit after a minor adductor issue, which is a massive boost as he’s been at the heart of all good things for the Swiss. Having served his suspension, Silvan Widmer will return at right wing-back. I’m Expecting the man to drop out to be Fabian Rieder, with Ndoye moving further up the pitch to his usual position.
England possible starting lineup: Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Stones, Konsa, Walker; Rice, Mainoo, Saka, Bellingham, Foden; Kane
Switzerland possible starting lineup: Sommer; Schar, Manuel Akanji, Rodriguez; Widmer, Xhaka, Freuler, Aebischer; Ndoye, Vargas; Embolo.
Euro 2024 Match Stats:Swiss to break new ground and Southgate strong in knockouts
- Michel Aebischer and Remo Freuler are both on two assists each, no England player has two.
- Swiss have reached quarter finals in successive European Championships but have never reached the semi finals in there history
- England have won twice and lost twice in European Championships quarter finals both losses were on penalties.
- Southgate has won more knockout games in major tournaments than all england managers since 1966 combined
