H2: England vs Spain Lowdown: The pinnacle
Sarina Weigman has made it to the finals of all four major tournaments as the manager. The Dutchwoman will be eyeing the Euros and World Cup double that she missed out on in 2019.
The Lionesses eliminated co-hosts Australia in the semi-finals of the competition with three different goalscorers. Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo all got on the scoresheet.
Hemp was especially impressive against the Matildas in the semi-finals. The 23-year-old forward scored one and assisted another in the 3-1 win. She was only behind club teammate Greenwood for shots created in the game (3). The Man City forward ran the channels and was relentless off-the-ball to force an issue in the box.
With Russo as her partner up front, the duo has been very effective in playing together. The duo have registered themselves on the scoresheet in back-to-back games. Russo has been the chief shot taker in the side, averaging over four shots per 90 so far.
Manchester City’s Greenwood has been a standout player throughout the tournament. The left-sided centre-back has looked solid in 1v1 defensive duels and has been extremely influential with her passing.
No player created more shots than Greenwood’s five against Australia. She also led the charts for passes into the final third with 14, almost twice as much as the next best (8, Georgia Stanway).
Jorge Vilda’s Spain…
Jorge Vilda’s Spain are looking to recreate their success from the youth levels. Spain has won both the U17 and U20 Women’s World Cup in the last year. The Spanish side has bounced back well after suffering a crushing 4-0 loss to Japan in the group stages.
La Roja have conceded in each of the last four games so far but have largely kept a lid on high-value chances. The Iberian side dominates the ball and has not conceded more than 1.0xG in a single game at the tournament so far.
Salma Parallels has been the differential off the bench for Spain. She recorded the most shots (4) in their semi-final clash against Sweden, despite only playing 34 minutes. The tall and athletic winger from Barcelona is an asset with her directness. She can dribble and carry the ball to attack the space in behind.
Alba Redondo has been one of the main attacking threats for this Spanish side. Having cemented her place as the right-sided forward, she has impressed in every game. The Levante forward averages the highest non-penalty xG among all Spanish players.
Against Sweden, Redondo registered the joint most touches in the penalty box (8). Her blindsided runs from the right flank have been an integral part of shot creation for Vilda’s side. She is consistently able to get on the end of high-value chances and has the highest average chance quality in the squad.
With the space on offer behind England’s wingbacks, Redondo and Paralleulo might find some joy again. The return of Lauren James will help alleviate the open-play chance creation problems for the Lionesses. The Chelsea forward ranks fourth for shots among the Lionesses despite missing two games due to suspension.
Weigman has won two of the three major finals she has been a part of, and her pedigree will come in handy. La Roja have looked to their bench to change games in the last two, but England have their fair share of game changers. It will boil down to defensive solidity in the end.
England vs Spain Stats: Imperious head-to-head
- England have only lost two of their last 13 games against Spain in all competitions.
- Salma Paralluelo has scored off the bench in each of the last two games for Spain
- Alba Redondo registered the joint most penalty box touches (8) for Spain against Sweden.
England vs Spain Bet Builder Tips: Redondo to threaten England glory
England Win
England have lost just two of their 13 games against La Roja in all competitions, famously eliminating them en route to their Euros win.
The defensive solidity has been the backbone of England’s campaign. Their defence has been breached just twice in six games so far in the competition. The trio of Alex Greenwood, Millie Bright and Jess Carter have looked extremely solid throughout the competition.
I believe that defensive robustness coupled with the nous in forward areas make England favourites for me, despite Spain taking the bookmakers’ favourites tag. For that reason alone, I think there’s value in the England win price.
Alba Redondo Over 1.5 Shots
Alba Redondo not only managed the most penalty box touches against Sweden (8), but she has also recorded 4, 4, 4, and 3 shots at goal in the games where she has played more than 45 minutes.
If Redondo starts in the World Cup final against England, expect her to try and put her name up in lights at least twice.
