Reading vs Ipswich: Tractor boys to plough to round three
English EFL Cup, Tuesday, 29th August 2023, 20:00 (UK)
After surprising Millwall with a 4-0 victory at the Den, Reading face another tough Championship test as Ipswich Town head to Berkshire.
Financial issues have plagued Reading, which has meant The Royals have dropped to League 1. Reading have had a mixed start, with two wins and three losses seeing them sit 16th.
Reading fielded an extremely youthful team in the first-round victory over Millwall, with Harvey Knibbs and Lewis Wing the only starters over 21. Ruben Selles selected a rotated eleven due to the small size of his squad and his need to prioritise league football. However, this did not deter the Royals, who blew the heavy favourites, Millwall, away.
Ipswich have enjoyed a successful return to the Championship thus far, with Kieran McKenna’s side in 6th place after three wins from four. The deadly attacking duo of Conor Chaplin and Nathan Broadhead already have two goals each.
McKenna opted for a rotated team in the first round, a 2-0 victory over Bristol Rovers, but it was still a squad packed with talent. George Edmundson was at the heart of the defence, impressing again after a strong League One season. Jack Taylor stood out for Peterborough in midfield, whereas Freddie Ladapo scored 17 goals last season.
Even if Ipswich rotate again, they should have enough talent to beat a youthful Reading side.
- Selection: Ipswich to Win

Nottingham Forest vs Burnley: Goals galore in the midlands
England, EFL Cup, Wednesday 30th August, 19:45 (UK)
Round Two welcomes the majority of Premier League teams into the competition, and it is an all-Premier League affair at the City Ground as Nottingham Forest hosts Burnley.
Nottingham Forest got to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup last year, eventually losing 5-0 on aggregate to Manchester United. Steve Cooper’s side has had an eventful start to the season, with a 2-1 home victory over Sheffield United sandwiched between a 2-1 defeat at the Emirates and a 3-2 loss at Old Trafford.
Cooper will be delighted with what he’s seen from his side this season and will be particularly pleased with the form of clinical talisman Taiwo Awoniyi, who has scored in seven straight league games for Nottingham Forest.
Burnley have had a harsh welcome back to the Premier League, losing 3-0 at home to treble winners Manchester City before losing 3-1 to Aston Villa. Vincent Kompany won’t be worried, though, as his squad’s talent was evident last season as the Clarets won the Championship with 101 points.
Over 2.5 goals have landed in 100% of both sides’ games this season, and it is priced at 1.89 for it to happen again.
- Selection: Over 2.5 Goals
- Best Odds: 1.89
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 10/10
Fulham vs Tottenham: North to prevail in the all London clash
England, EFL Cup Tuesday 29th August, 19:45 (UK)
Another all-Premier League tie as West London side Fulham host North London’s Tottenham Hotspur at Craven Cottage.
After a solid return to the Premier League, Fulham have enjoyed a respectable start to the season. The Whites started the campaign with a smash-and-grab 1-0 victory at Goodison Park over Everton. This was followed up by a disappointing 3-0 loss at home to rivals Brentford before battling to a 2-2 draw at the Emirates.
Tottenham have enjoyed life under new manager Ange Postecoglu, gaining seven points from nine games. A 2-2 draw at Brentford has been followed up by consecutive 2-0 wins over Manchester United and Bournemouth. The Australian has Spurs playing an attractive style of play, with Malian international Yves Bissouma at the heart of it as the deepest midfielder.
Postecoglou has hinted he is set to take this competition seriously as he attempts to break Tottenham’s trophy curse, and I believe they will be too strong for Marco Silva’s Fulham.
- Selection: Tottenham to Win
- Best Odds: 1.90
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 10/10
