Oxford United vs Bristol Rovers: Fifth straight win? I’m not Gassing U’s
England, League One, Saturday, October 7th, 12:30 (UK)
Oxford’s appointment of Liam Manning in March is proving to be something of a masterstroke. Taking over a side in 18th place and just three points clear of the relegation zone, having picked up one point from its previous ten fixtures, the 37-year-old was simply tasked with avoiding the drop.
The U’s lost only three of the remaining ten games in the run-in to preserve their League One status and have got off to a blistering start this season. We saw echoes of the form in Manning’s successful spell at MK Dons, where he guided them to the play-off semi-final in his first season.
After cruising to a 3-0 home win against Shrewsbury on Tuesday, only a 98th-minute winner for Portsmouth prevented the Yellows going top of the table. Even so, there are no complaints from the Kassam Stadium faithful about a fourth successive win where they have seen their side score three goals on each occasion.
A record of four wins from five home games will be put to the test by this Bristol Rovers side, who continue to be managed by Joey Barton in his unique style. The Gas bounced back from their weekend defeat at Peterborough in midweek with a 3-0 win over 10-man Port Vale at The Memorial Stadium.
However, Rovers could not name a complete substitutes bench and only included five outfield players. Having also lost two of their last three on the road, I feel the injury crisis may have bitten a little too hard to prevent Oxford from taking all three points from this clash.
- Selection: Oxford to Win
- Best Odds: 1.80

Exeter City vs Barnsley: More away day heaven, this time in Devon
England, League One, Saturday, October 7th, 15:00 (UK)
Barnsley’s season could not have got off to a better start. A stunning 7-0 thrashing of Port Vale at Oakwell set expectations high.
However, a pair of 3-1 defeats in their following two home league games left many, myself included, wondering what we were going to get from the Tykes across the whole season. What we have seen is it is an impressive away record that is underpinning any promotion charge.
Tuesday’s fantastic 4-0 victory at Cambridge was a fourth consecutive League One away win for Neill Collins’ side. This means they have claimed 13 points from a possible 15 on the road, keeping three clean sheets and conceding just two goals along the way. A league-low.
The 40-year-old manager described the win at The Abbey Stadium as as good as his side have been in all aspects of the game. They travel to Devon back up to 4th in the table and boast the best away record in the third tier.
Exeter slipped to a third straight league defeat after being soundly beaten at Charlton on Tuesday despite taking the lead. A harsh red card for captain Will Aimson completed a night to forget for the Grecians.
A win against rock-bottom Cheltenham, who are yet to score a goal in 11 league games this season, splits two home defeats. Gary Caldwell’s side lost four of their last five League One outings and, as a consequence, has seen them slip to 13th.
They have also lost four of their last five in all competitions. A sequence of results started with a confidence-sapping 9-0 home loss to Reading in the EFL Trophy.
With both sides in such contrasting form and Barnsley’s away record better than their results at home, being able to take the visitors at odds-against is too good to ignore.
- Selection: Barnsley to Win
- Best Odds: 2.80
- Bookmaker: Betfair
- Stake: 7/10
Salford vs Crewe: Railwaymen to keep on track and strike the right note at Salford
England, League Two, Saturday, October 7th, 15:00 (UK)
This game leapt out of the screen when I checked through the EFL fixtures for the weekend. Crewe have been massively undervalued here.
As has been the case for the last couple of seasons, Salford were one of the ante-post favourites for promotion. Quotes of around 15.0 justified, given their appearance in the play-off semi-finals last term.
Crewe, on the other hand, were regarded as 67.0 outsiders. More in danger of leaving the division via the bottom rather than the top.
However, since the action started in August, those odds have looked around the wrong way, if anything. The Red Devils ended a run of five straight defeats in the league with back-to-back wins against Newport and Sutton. Although putting that into context, that’s a Sutton side that had picked up just one point from their last nine games.
After keeping their first clean sheet of the season in a 2-0 win against high-flying Gillingham on Tuesday, The Railwaymen find themselves up in 3rd ahead of this clash. They have now taken 14 points from the last 18 on offer.
Only Swindon, with 27, can top the 26 goals scored by Lee Bell’s side, with an impressive 12 players contributing to that total. Alex have also shown a fantastic never-say-die spirit this term.
Having found themselves 2-0 down on four occasions – only to fight back and claim a 2-2 draw each time. They have picked up 10 points already from losing positions this campaign.
Salford have only recorded one win on home soil from five attempts, and Crewe only tasted defeat once in the league all season. The 1.80 available for either a draw or Crewe win is an outstanding price.
- Selection: Crewe or Draw Double Chance
- Best Odds: 1.80
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 9/10
