Fluminense vs Gremio: Injury hit hosts to suffer defeat
Brazil, Serie A, Thursday, 7th December, 00:30 (UK)
We’ve come to an end of a long, gruelling season, and one in which Fluminense will be desperate to put their feet up. Their first Libertadores title was a huge success but has evidently taken a toll on their players.
Against Palmeiras at the weekend, a depleted squad travelled to Sao Paulo. On Thursday, that will be no different in front of their home crowd.
Top goalscorer German Cano, Felipe Melo, Marcelo, John Arias, Samuel Xavier and captain Nino will all miss their final home match due to injury. The congested fixture list has taken its toll.
They also have nothing but pride left to play for. Having won the Libertadores, they are automatically back next year – and while Gremio will join them, they may well need to secure three points in order to head straight to the group stage and avoid the qualifiers.
Luis Suarez will play his last game for the club, having agreed to move to Inter Miami. However, the Uruguayan has scored 15 goals and added 11 assists for Gremio, and he’ll be keen to make sure they secure a top-four finish. Having just been promoted from Serie B, Gremio have had a season to remember and will want to sign off in style.
Cruzeiro vs Palmeiras: Reigning champions to keep hold of their crown
Brazil, Serie A, Thursday, 7th December, 00:30 (UK)
Palmeiras have Botafogo to thank for their incredible slip-up, with the current champions all but sealing their title.
Reports suggest Abel Ferreira may be on his way to Qatar to manage Al-Sadd, so he’ll of course want to sign off his incredible tenure with another title to his name.
Key victories over Internacional, Botafogo, America MG and Fluminense have steered Palmeiras to the top of the table in recent weeks, showing exactly why they are worthy champions.
They head to Cruzeiro, who will have their own celebrations, having secured safety thanks to a five-match unbeaten run when it truly mattered.
However, despite their recent success, they’ve only managed four home wins this season in the league, two of which came before round four back in May. Having scored just 13 goals at home, they’ll finish the season with the lowest goal tally in front of their own supporters by a sizable margin.
The visitors have had little to no issues scoring away from home. With 28 goals, only Flamengo (30) have outscored them on their travels.
Palmeiras won the reverse fixture with a last-gasp winner thanks to Jose Lopez, but with the title not officially wrapped up, Ferreira will want to make sure three points are secured.
Bahia vs Atletico MG: Bahia to be relegated to Serie B
Brazil, Serie A, Thursday, 7th December, 00:30 (UK)
Atletico MG knows the title race isn’t over, and Felipe Scolari will be doing everything he can to make sure they can leapfrog Palmeiras if Ferreira’s side falters.
A nine-match unbeaten run, including seven wins, has elevated Atletico MG to second place after a terrific end to the campaign. Paulinho sits top of the goalscorer charts with 19 goals, whilst his strike partner, Hulk, has 15 of his own – as well as 11 assists.
Their partnership is the most effective in Brazil this season, and there’s no doubt Paulinho will have plenty of European admirers in January.
Bahia, on the other hand, are fighting for their lives. A win and results going their way is necessary if they are to avoid the drop. However, two defeats on the bounce to Sao Paulo at home, their only away win all year, and a 3-2 defeat to already relegated America MG doesn’t offer much hope.
They’ve lost six of their last ten matches, which did throw up a surprise 5-1 victory over Corinthians, but as they have all season, have failed to show any kind of consistency.
The hosts couldn’t have picked a worse opponent if they had tried – in form and attempting to win the league title with a striker partnership with 34 goals between them. Atletico MG should confirm their relegation on Thursday.
