America MG vs Bahia: Visitors to boost survival hopes
Brazil, Serie A, Sunday, 3rd December, 19:00 (UK)
Bahia are one of the hardest teams to predict this year. After a 6-4 (that isn’t a slip on the keyboard) victory over Goias, they went on to only score five in their next eight matches.
Then, when everyone was against them, they hammered Corinthians 5-1 in their own backyard. They’ve shown towards the back end of the season they deserve to be in Serie A for another season, and their opponents are already preparing for Serie B next campaign.
Another defeat on the weekend saw America MG reach a total of 14 games without a win and 21 points adrift of 16th place. It’s been a dismal campaign for them, and one they’ll want to be over as soon as possible.
With so much on the line for Bahia, the game could be quite frantic – but I’m anticipating plenty of goals if the visitors are as ruthless as they were last time out. If they sense blood, they’ll be looking to strike.
Experienced striker Everaldo will return to the squad after missing the Corinthians game, and their top goalscorer will be key if they are to claim the win.
Three points is a must, especially with a difficult end to the season hosting Atletico Mineiro – and they’ll want to make sure they are safe before the last game if possible.
Palmeiras vs Fluminense: Hosts to put one hand on the title
Brazil, Serie A, Sunday, 3rd December, 19:00 (UK)
Palmeiras have been gifted an opportunity at the title after Botafogo’s constant slip ups. But the job is far from over – and a tough match on paper against the Libertadores winners awaits.
However, the hosts will be relishing this one. Fluminense have been diabolical on the road this campaign. They’ve used the Maracana as their advantage, but away from it, it’s been nothing but a shambles.
With just 10 points from 17 matches on the road, conceding 28, Diniz’s bold style of play needs tweaking if his style is going to work long term.
Palmeiras have the third best record in the league at home, and Allianz Parque is an extremely difficult place to go and pick up points.
In recent weeks, a Real Madrid bound 17-year-old has helped the champions rise to the top of the table. Endrick’s goals have been crucial – and expect him to be at the heart of the action once more.
The champions fought back bravely with 10 men to secure a vital point against Fortaleza on the road, and with a home match against America MG midweek before this clash, it’s another chance for Palmeiras to flex their muscles on home soil.
It’ll be an entertaining watch, especially with the preferred set ups of both teams, but there’s only one outcome in my eyes with so much on the line for the hosts.
Gremio vs Vasco: Visitors to fight for survival
Brazil, Serie A, Sunday, 3rd December, 21:30 (UK)
Gremio’s title charge came to somewhat of a halt in the past week. Since their incredible 4-3 comeback against Botafogo, they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Corinthians before brushed aside 3-0 against Atletico Mineiro.
Although they won’t be getting their hands on silverware this season, it’s been a phenomenal campaign having just been promoted from Serie B. They’ll be keen to make sure they squeeze into the Libertadores, but are clearly struggling to get over the line. However, they still have the fourth best home form in the Brasileirão, and Luis Suarez has been one of the reasons for that.
Vasco, another side recently promoted from Serie B, are in a spot of bother compared to Gremio. However, in recent weeks they’ve dug themselves out of a hole and are arguably a victory away from survival.
Recent form has been very strong, too, rising to the occasion. They were unbeaten in six before a midweek defeat to Corinthians, which included an impressive win over Botafogo. Vasco head to Gremio confident on the road.
Four unbeaten away from home, which included a 2-0 win against Cuiaba, as well as conceding just three goals across those matches, proves they can be difficult to break down. However, Corinthians bagging four against them shows they can be vulnerable if they don’t show their true selves.
With Gremio looking to cement a Libertadores spot, and with Vasco fighting for their lives, expect action at both ends of the pitch, which can hopefully lead to both teams finding the back of the net.
