Atletico Goianiense vs Flamengo Prediction 1: Visitors superiority to shine through

Atletico GO head into their fixture with Brazilian giants Flamengo on the back of winning their last 15 matches. However, those matches have come in the state cup against far inferior opposition and I can’t help but feel as though the victories have impacted Flamengo’s price – which is very much worth chancing.

Flamengo won their state cup on the weekend, and Tite chose to field a full strength side having already won the first leg 3-0. He wasn’t willing to take any risks, it seems. A midweek fixture vs Palestino in the Libertadores adds another fixture to the list, but the importance of starting strongly in the Brasileirão can’t be underestimated. 

They fell behind Botafogo by too many points last campaign and didn’t have enough fixtures to recover – Tite won’t want a repeat of that situation.

The hosts have brought in numerous loan deals due to their limited funds, and although Emiliano Rodriguez’s move from Boston River catches the eye, they look sure to find life extremely difficult against Flamengo’s star studded squad.

Even if Flamengo rotate, their sheer quality within their ranks should be more than enough to see off the league’s new boys.

Atletico Goianiense vs Flamengo Prediction 2: In form striker can’t be ignored

Sometimes it’s best to not overcomplicate a bet and although this may look like a rather obvious selection, the evidence suggests we shouldn’t dismiss it.

Pedro has been in fine form and continues to be Tite’s main man. Leading the line in a 4-5-1 formation, and with the likes of Nicolas de la Cruz, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Everton in behind, there’s no wonder Pedro continues to get plenty of opportunities – and score them.

Before their match vs Palestino in the Libertadores, the Brazilian striker has scored 11 goals in his last ten matches, which included goals vs Fluminense, Nova Iguacu in the Carioca final and one from the penalty spot against Millonarios in the Libertadores.

Pedro’s array of finishing is what makes this bet even more attractive. Yes, he’s Flamengo’s dedicated penalty taker, but the striker who scored over 30 goals in the last campaign is one of the best inside the box. Whether it’s his clever movement to find the half-yard of space or battling in the air, not many will enjoy coming up against him – and certainly not a team new to the league.

Atletico Goianiense vs Flamengo Prediction 3: Skipper to get involved

If Pedro is to have a rare game of not finding the back of the net, Flamengo’s captain appeals at a bigger price.

Occupying the space just behind Pedro, de Arrascaeta can often be found lurking around the 18-yard box or making overlapping runs beyond his striker into the box. We witnessed this vs Nova Iguacu last weekend, although the Uruguayan failed to find the back of the net.

He scored three goals during the state cup for Flamengo, and is normally the provider within the XI, but the amount of quality he has inside the final third, as well as set pieces, makes him an attractive alternative to Pedro.

The Uruguayan international scored 11 goals across all competitions last campaign, but Tite has built the team around him, and allowed him to move into a more advanced position since his arrival.

With others in and around him not in any kind of eye catching goalscoring form, and with changes likely to be made across the week, de Arrascaeta will be the one consistent in the final third, and he’ll no doubt have opportunities against a team of Atletico GO’s quality.

Flamengo have a midweek Libertadores match to contend with, while Atletico GO have seven days of rest before their return to the Brasileirão. Tite may well choose to rotate due to the demanding fixture list, but the former Brazilian head coach has preferred to stick to the core of his team in the early stages of the season.

However, with so much quality within their squad, Flamengo fans will be demanding nothing less than a victory in their first match of the season against a side promoted from Serie B.
