Arsenal vs Sevilla Tip 1: Lights, Camera, Action…

Europe, Champions League, November 7th, 20:00 (UK)

Arsenal and Sevilla meet again on Wednesday night at the Emirates as the second half of the group stage begins. Mikel Arteta’s side won the recent clash at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán a fortnight ago. Brazilian duo Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus both found the back of the net on the night.

It’s been a tricky November for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal. West Ham knocked them out of the EFL Cup, which was followed by a 1-0 defeat at St James’ Park over the weekend. Despite all that, I’m confident the Gunners can bounce back and win at home once again under the lights.

Goals have been scored at a ridiculous rate at the Emirates since the start of the 22/23 campaign. A remarkable 4.1 goals on average were scored across their 19 home Premier League games last season (53-25), with a further 21 arriving in six games this campaign. That’s excluding a 4-0 win over PSV on the opening match day.

The Gunners have scored multiple times in six of their seven matches in all competitions here. The exception came against Manchester City in a narrow victory. They’ve been impressive defensively, only Manchester City have a better xGA statistic in the top flight.

Sevilla are 15th in La Liga. They’ve earned just three points from five matches and have yet to win on the road since May. On average, they’re conceding 1.5 goals per game and gave the 7th worst xGA. Across their six away days, their opponents have created a whopping 22 ‘big chances’.

PSV had 26 shots when they hosted Sevilla in their only away day so far in this competition. The game ended 2-2 despite the home dominance, where they had 18 shots inside the box with eight on target as well as 63% possession. It’s clear that the Spanish side struggles away from home in Europe. They’re winless in 14 consecutive away games.

Arsenal are as short as 1.25 to win this clash. Therefore, combining a home win with three or more goals to be scored looks to be a good way in. Eddie Nketiah will be expected to lead the line. All five of his goals this season have arrived at home. With Jesus ruled out due to injury, he’ll be wanting to cement a place in this team for weeks to come.

After suffering back-to-back defeats, I’m confident Arteta and his side will be ready and wanting to put things right. They have a number of players who can create problems for the underwhelming Sevilla defence.

Arsenal vs Sevilla Tip 2: Not afraid to get stuck in under the lights

People may recognise this name from somewhere, and you’d be right: Boubakary Soumare spent the last two seasons with Leicester City. The Frenchman is out on loan in Spain at a side that isn’t afraid to get stuck in and pick up a booking or four.

Soumare has waited a while to get into the side. He’s now started each of the last four games. New boss Diego Alonso appears to be a fan of the energetic Frenchman, who’s picked up three cards in the four matches under the Uruguayan.

Sevilla and Soumare won’t be afraid to get stuck in. They can’t afford to lose this match, given their current position in the group. Every side that has visited this venue across the 23/24 season has picked up at least two cautions. I’d expect that figure to continue here with relative ease.

The price appeals, and even more so knowing that this selection has won in seven of Soumare’s last 11 starts for Leicester and Sevilla combined.

Arsenal vs Sevilla Tip 3: It’s a punt, but at 6″2 with a fine leap…

Now, this is a punt, but it’s something that I wanted to include, just in case. The Moroccan is 6”2 and has a fine leap, something he should use to his advantage once again here in the capital.

The 26-year-old has scored six times in all competitions this campaign, with five of those coming from his head. In the reverse fixture, En-Nesyri recorded a headed shot on target. Given that he’s priced at 4.00 to score, the huge jump into the 14.0 play looks more than reasonable.

Nemanja Gudelj scored with his head when these sides met in Spain. Arsenal committed 13 fouls a fortnight ago, their second-highest tally of the campaign. Sevilla can frustrate the hosts. Playacting can undoubtedly play a part. Set pieces may be their best chance of scoring against the group leaders.

Arsenal vs Sevilla Team News: Key Ammunition Absent for Gunners

Thomas Partey, Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Jesus are all expected to miss this clash, the trio are all expected to return to action by late November. Martin Ødegaard is a doubt, he wasn’t part of the squad in the defeat at Newcastle over the weekend. It’s still not confirmed whether he’ll be part of the squad on Wednesday night.

Nketiah will lead the line, with minimal changes from the weekend’s matches against Newcastle. Raya is still the preferred choice between the sticks.

Sergio Ramos has a muscle injury and is a doubt. He missed the game at the weekend away at Celta Vigo. There appears to be no other new injury concerns for Sevilla in their trip to London.

Arsenal vs Sevilla OPTA Stats: Declan Rice leading the progressive charge

  • Sevilla are looking for their first away victory in the UEFA Champions League since December 2020 (3-1 v  Rennes), having failed to win any of their last eight away trips in the competition (D6 L2).
  • Arsenal won 4-0 in their first UEFA Champions League home game under Mikel Arteta (v PSV), while the  Gunners haven’t lost at home in the group stage of the competition since September 2015 vs Olympiakos, going unbeaten in the last six (W5 D1).
  • Sevilla have won just one of their 11 away games against English sides in all European competition (D5 L5),  beating Manchester United 2-1 in the 2017-18 UEFA Champions League round of 16.
  • Declan Rice has made 18 progressive carries of 10+ metres in the UEFA Champions League this season – the most of any Arsenal player. Indeed, through the opening three rounds of the current tournament,  Manchester City’s Rodri (28) is the only midfielder who made more.
  • Arsenal have won just three of their 11 UEFA Champions League group stage games against Spanish sides  (D2 L6). However, two of those victories have come in their three games against Sevilla, including a 3-0 home  win in September 2007.
