Washington Wizards vs Brooklyn Nets Best Bet: Monday, December 12th
The 11-16 Washington Wizards play host to the 16-12 Brooklyn Nets in the capital on Monday night. Only three teams (Minnesota, Miami, Dallas) have covered the spread less frequently than the Wizards in 2022-23, who are 5.5-point underdogs.
Brooklyn is 7-6 against the spread on the road, but has gone 8-2 over its last 10 games with the sixth-best net rating in the Association. Washington is 1-9 over that period after a hot start to the season. They are down in 24th in net rating.
The Nets have their big three available, but Nic Claxton is questionable and Royce O’Neale is out. Washington is without Bradley Beal, Rui Hachimura and Delon Wright. Monte Morris is questionable with a groin issue.

It’s hard to feel great about backing the Brooklyn Nets. This franchise has been, to put it mildly, turbulent over the last couple of years, and their performances have fluctuated between elite and shambolic. They have lost just once since 25th November, however, and beat the Wizards by six points less than two weeks ago.
Brooklyn has partly been taking advantage of a favourable schedule. Also, this has been the outcome of getting healthy. Kevin Durant is playing like an MVP, Kyrie Irving’s scoring has elevated their offence, and Ben Simmons is working his way back to being an effective two-way player.
With Beal still out, it is very difficult to envisage the Wizards keeping pace with the Nets. Washington started the season well, but they have the worst defence in the league over the last 10 games. The Wiz give up a tonne of mid-range looks, which doesn’t seem like a good idea against Durant and Irving.
On offence, they are bottom-10 in three-point rate and shots at the rim. Their best chance of success is dominating the glass, an area where the Nets are weak, and the main strength for Washington.
Morris’ availability is a big factor here, too. The Wiz are obviously a less scary opponent without Beal, but they have benefited from the steady point guard play of the former Nugget, too. Washington is 6.2 points per 100 possessions better with Morris on the floor.

The respective records are a bit misleading with these teams. Their seasons started in contrasting fashion. Since then, they have been at opposite ends of the NBA spectrum, with the Nets playing like an upper echelon playoff team, and the Wizards looking destined for the depths of the lottery.
Many of Brooklyn’s recent wins have been by a relatively small margin, but this should be routine for Durant and co. There’s definitely blowout potential here.
