NCAA BAsketball Saturday Best Bets: The Madness Continues
NCAA BASKETBALL January MADNESS BEST BETS: SATURDAY, January 14th
Our resident college hoops expert Ej Garr is simply in the zone lately, and he has decided to pick out a pair of Big 12 Conference games to preview for Saturday. The Sooners will play host to West Virginia at noon on the east coast, and just a couple of hours later, the Horned Frogs will welcome Kansas State to the great State of Texas.
Can Ej break out yet another 2 – 0 to finish the week undefeated? Oh, you bet he can!

So, it’s back to the Big 12 Conference I go, and I am sorry I am not covering the Kansas game for you this Saturday. However, I will discuss Kansas State in this article and there is no way I am leaving Oklahoma off the board to start the weekend.
With an 11 a.m. local tipoff in Norman, the Sooners arrive at the party favoured by only a bucket, although the line setters might make us pay a bit for it. I see -2 and 1.83 at Pinnacle, and I am taking that line as it is because I like keeping myself in a position to push my action.
I don’t think West Virginia will do anything to get in our way, but I approach every game with a just-in-case approach because there are no guarantees in life. The Mountaineers have completely stunk up the joint since Big 12 Conference play got underway, and with only one road win this entire campaign this is not a good position for West Virginia to be in right now.
Things are about to get even worse for the Mountaineers after this game, as TCU and Texas are going hand the Mountaineers their ass following up on this affair. That will put West Virginia at 0 – 7 in Big 12 play and I don’t see any other choice but to fade them again. It’s not like we have to lay some kind of significant number either, as a bucket to me is well, just a drop in the bucket if you will.
As you know, I posted about the Oklahoma and Kansas match the last time we met, and I told you Oklahoma was not just going to be dismissed with ease. That is why I was in no way laying that double-digit spread so we ploughed the over with success instead.
Grant Sheffield is the distinguished leader for the Sooners, as he pours in 17 points a game, shoots over 45% from distance, and you better not put him on the free throw line. The dude is just automatic, and I do not doubt that West Virginia will try to not let him beat them by himself.
Rebounding numbers are always on my mind, and the Sooners rank 24th in the country on the defensive glass. Speaking of free throws, West Virginia is a complete mess at the line, barely converting 70% of their shots from the charity stripe.
Oklahoma Sooners vs West Virginia Mountaineers Best Bet
West Virginia is playing high school basketball in a college game, and I don’t respect anything they have done to this point of the campaign. Quote me… The Mountaineers will be 0 – 7 in Big 12 Conference play when they take on Texas Tech on January 25.
- Selection: Oklahoma -2
- Best odds: 1,83 (Pinnacle)
- Stakes 4/10

What a game this is going to be, and I cannot believe that Kansas State is still getting 4 points to put in their pockets. Well, we will have all of those points in our pockets and I don’t even think we’ll need them. Should I just go with the Kansas State Moneyline? The dog in me loves to bark at those types of offers because I am the Mayor of Value City and that screams value to me. However, I am also a fan of points in our pockets when I expect this tight of a game, and make no mistake this game will come down to the final possession.
Whichever team buries their final shot will take home the cookies, and I do not doubt that in my mind. These two teams are outstanding, and neither of them is going to just go away lightly.
The Wildcats are putting their 9-game win streak on the line today, and look at who they have on deck… KANSAS! No one wants to say they got caught looking ahead, but we all know that Kansas State has Kansas circled on the schedule and that is going to be an all-out war.
The Horned Frogs are 2 – 2 in Big 12 play, but both of those losses are what they are carrying into this game. That is not the momentum you want to deal with when a team that’s lost only 1 game all year is coming into your barn.
Keyontae Johnson is an absolute stud for K State, and Markquis Nowell runs this offense with efficiency and precision while also coming up big on the defensive end of the floor. Nowell is averaging over 17 points a game, drops nearly 9 dimes a night, and his hands are always active coming up with nearly 3 steals per contest as well.
Depth is also a factor for Kansas State, as you will see 9 guys contributing daily and four of those players shoot nearly 40% from behind the arc. That’s a huge problem for TCU who has no idea how to defend the 3-ball. Ranked 336th in the Nation, TCU practically dares you to shoot from outside, and Kansas State is going to make them pay for that all day!
TCU Horned Frogs vs Kansas State Wildcats Best Bet
TCU is going to win this game, but we’ll take the 4 points out of principle alone. I don’t think we’ll need the points, and if you splash Kansas State ML at 2.50 I will not yell at you other than to say WELL PLAYED!
- Selection: Kansas State +4
- Best odds: 1.91 (Pinnacle)
- Stakes 4/10
