The Los Angeles Lakers host the Denver Nuggets on Monday night with their season on the line. What looked to be a close matchup at the start of these Western Conference Finals has not worked out that way – Denver has a 3-0 series lead, a deficit which no team has ever recovered from. The Lakers are still three-point favourites for Game Four, however.
Denver has scored 22 more points, grabbed 22 more rebounds, and made 17 more threes through the first three games in this series. The blockbuster trade made by the Lakers to dump Russell Westbrook has not helped in this matchup, with Malik Beasley out of the rotation, D’Angelo Russell struggling and Jarred Vanderbilt playing minimal minutes.

In stark contrast, Denver has had good contributions throughout its rotation. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has come back to haunt his former team. Jeff Green has played okay minutes as a smallball five. Bruce Brown has again proven to be an exceptional Playoff performer. Of course, Jamal Murray has engaged postseason mode, averaging 35 points per game on over 45% from downtown.
Rui Hachimura and Austin Reaves are the two players who have stepped up for the Lakers. Hachimura has taken on a bigger role, with Darvin Ham needing his offence over Vanderbilt’s one-way play. The former Wizard has done enough on defence to stay on the floor, too. After being reduced to a minimal role against the Warriors, Hachimura has scored 17, 21 and 13 points in this series. We like his chances of making it four consecutive games in double figures.
With Russell proving ineffective, and LeBron James clearly far from healthy, Reaves’ role has been significant as a playmaker and scorer. The Lakers have got a lot of good looks by putting the ball in Reaves’ hands, which has been reflected in his assist totals.
Reaves has passed this assists line in his last five games. Ham will ride the second-year guard in this must-win game. Don’t be surprised if he plays mid-forties minutes and should easily hit this over if so.

The offensive level of the Nuggets in this series has been exceptional. The Lakers have only been league average by regular season standards, but they have still got well into triple figures in every game.
