Greece will be the first stronger opponent for Team USA in their FIBA World Cup campaign, but there are reasons they should win without many problems. Greece struggles at creating quality shots because they lack pure scorers and solid three-point shooters. The USA plays single coverage defence, and being without a scorer against that defence led to easy defeats.
They faced each other in preparation games, and Team USA won 108-86. Greece scored a solid number of points, but on a really poor efficiency: just 36% for two points, and 32% for three points. The free throw line saved them from a debacle, but they shouldn’t have that many free throws, as Kerr should prepare his team to be even more disciplined on defence.
On the other side of the floor, the USA demolished Greece. They scored whenever they wanted and finished the game with 108 points. Greece’s defence will get overstretched, and also there is a huge advantage of the USA having NBA ballhandlers, while Greece has guards that are accommodated to the Euroleague level of ballhandling.
There should be easy crossovers by team USA that will generate either threes or drives to the basket.
Thomas Walkup Under 6.5 Assists
Walkup started solidly in his first major tournament with Greece. In a victory against Jordan, Walkup had 13 points and 7 assists. But today’s opponent has a much better defence than Jordan.
Jordan overhelped on many post-ups and drives, so Walkup had easy assists, but against the USA, that won’t really happen. Team USA prefers single coverage defence, which also means switching in the PNR.
That will limit assist opportunities for Walkup. In preparation game against the USA, Walkup had just one assist for 20 minutes of play. Also, even if he makes a great find to the open three-point shooter, Greece doesn’t shoot well and Walkup will have several potential assists that were missed.
