The Golden State Warriors welcome the LA Clippers to Chase Center tonight for their first encounter of the season. The Dubs are coming off a 128-83 debacle in New Orleans, and they are hoping to bounce back against an injured Clippers side, and the bookmakers expect a comfortable win for the home side. But their lack of defence this season has caused them to lose much of their betting value, so I’m looking at the Over/Under market to get us some.

The Defending champs the Golden State Warriors are in trouble, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be able to make another title run at this pace. After 18 games played they are sitting in 11th place in the Western Conference with just 8 wins and 10 losses to their record. They are coming off a brutal 128-87 road loss against the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night, and are looking to bounce back again the injured Clippers side. Though their road performance has been absolutely terrible this season, winning just 1 of their 10 games, they’ve been superb at Chase Center, taking 7 of 8.
The Warriors’ biggest issue by far this year has been their terrible defence. The Dubs simply aren’t moving quickly enough, and are always a step behind to defend both inside and out. The Warriors are allowing an average of 118.0 points per game (28th in the league), whilst allowing 22.1 free throws per game. Their offence, on the other hand, has been clicking well, averaging 115.7 points, 29.0 assists (1st in NBA) and 15.8 three-pointers made. The Dubs are a fast-paced team and like to push the tempo, resulting in 106.6 possessions per game, the second-highest in the league.
The Los Angeles Clippers are the exact opposite of their opponents tonight. They’ve actually had a great start to the season and are now 4th in the conference with an 11-7 record. They have won 7 of their last 10 and are coming off a solid 121-114 win over the Utah Jazz on Monday. This will be a short 1-game road trip to San Francisco before going back to LA to face the Nuggets. Both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George will miss this game, joined by Luke Kennard with a calf injury.
The Clippers are one slower side of the league with a pace rating of 98.2 and 101.2 possessions per game (28th in the NBA). They struggle to score, despite having 2 superstars on their roster, averaging just 106.1 points per game. That said, their offence is quite efficient, having a field goal percentage of 47.5% and draining 37.6% of their three-pointers. Their defence has been their bread and butter so far, allowing just 105.8 points per game and ranking 2nd in defensive rating. But this might change tonight, given their injury issues and the play style of the Warriors.

The Dubs love to push the tempo and they shoot a lot of threes. They had a terrible offensive night against the Pelicans, but they typically play well at home and they should be able to bounce back with most of their players healthy and back in the lineup. If they can get their offence going out of the gate, the Clippers will have no choice but the follow and we might end up seeing a shootout.
The Clippers are far from a high-scoring team, but they have the ability to take advantage of the Warriors’ lack of defence and keep the game close. The Dubs are heavy favourites tonight at 1.28 odds, and the spread is set at 9.0 points, but I’m looking at the Over/Under for value. The line is set at 222.5 points, but if we get the high-paced start that I expect, we might end up seeing a lot more. I’m backing the Over.
