The Spiders earned their way to the second round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament after a convincing win over UMass on Tuesday afternoon at the Barclay’s Center here in Brooklyn, NY. I live a stone’s throw from the arena and I will admit that I almost got tickets for the final 2 days of the tourney for the semis and final game.
As you know, I have covered a boatload of Atlantic 10 Conference games around this place throughout the regular season, and I cannot believe my eyes right now. George Mason is favoured by a single point!
Now, I am usually one to shy away from favourites because I know the line setters do that to set people up for failure, but in this case, I do believe the better team is the Patriots right now.
I gave out the Under for the UMass vs Richmond game on Tuesday afternoon, and there are easy wins and then there is that result. 141? Yeah, how about barely 109 points, thanks! This total is listed at 131, but we don’t need to toy around with the total in this spot.
The Patriots swept the season series with Richmond, and the last time they met was on the final day of the regular season on March 4. The 62 – 60 win for George Mason gives them a 6-game win streak coming into the conference tourney, and that is the momentum we look for this time of year. Getting past UMass yesterday means squat to me because I think the Spiders are about to get squashed today by the Patriots.
If you haven’t had a chance to catch Josh Oduro in action, the dude put up 12 double-doubles this year while his 15.6 PPG lead the Patriots in scoring, Oduro has scored double-digits in 19 straight games, although his free throw shooting numbers could certainly use some improvement.
With Victor Bailey out of the mix for George Mason, they have been playing without him since February 4. Bailey’s presence in this lineup could have helped if the Patriots plan on making a deep run here in Brooklyn. He is one of four players on this roster that average double-digits, although they have adjusted well without him over the last month of the campaign.
Devonte Gaines has taken full advantage of the situation at guard with Bailey out, as he dumped 23 points and grabbed 8 rebounds against Richmond in the season finale. Gaines has gotten his average up to 7.2 PPG but those 6 boards a night always come in handy.
Davidson and St. Bonaventure will open the day’s event at 11:30 ET here in New York, so this game will be played about a half hour after that match concludes. George Washington will play St. Joseph’s in the third game of the day and Duquesne will play La Salle to wrap up the 2nd round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.

As I said, I am not one to think the chalk is placed on the better team all the time because the line setters know what they are doing. In this case, the Patriots have a 6-game win streak and the squad to take out Richmond. We don’t even have to lay any points either, so a win of any type will essentially do.
