Australia looks to have the biggest value, as they will have many NBA players that will be accompanied by solid NBL players.
While their preparation game vs Venezuela isn’t that meaningful, what is important is that if everything goes out as it should, Australia should avoid all other top 4 teams in the tournament until the semi-finals, and will avoid the USA until the finals.
Of course, surprises can happen, but when we look at the strength of the squad and projected brackets, they should have a higher chance to win it all. They won bronze at the Olympics without Giddey and Dyson Daniels, while Josh Green and Matisse Thybulle were two years less experienced.
Also, Dante Exum is a far better player than he was in back 2021. They fought really well vs the great USA Olympic squad, going toe-to-toe for 3 quarters. They have a great squad heading into the tournament and the odds next to their name are quite enticing.
In last year’s Eurobasket, Germany finished third, while being so close to reaching the finals against France. With only Maxi Kleber not being there from that squad, they will try to go the furthest they can. One of their advantages is that they have a great continuity of playing together.
If they manage to snag a win against Australia in the group stage, half of their job is done, as they won’t face the USA until the finals. Of course, they will still need to beat strong teams to get there, but they proved in preparations against the USA and Canada that they are at that level. Odds should be lower for them than the bookmakers set them.
Australia FIBA World Cup 2023 Analysis
In the group stage, Australia will play in group E against Germany, Finland, and Japan. Group E is not a tough group, but also not a cakewalk. In the next stage, the most formidable opponent for Aussies will be Slovenia, who showcased major weaknesses in preparation games. Doncic is spectacular, but the team defence is lacklustre, and there is a lack of depth.
Their opponents from the quarterfinals to finals will be tough, but in the end, to be the best in the world, you need to beat the best. First, in the quarterfinals, they will face France, Spain, or Canada.
They won against France in preparations and showcased all of France’s offensive weaknesses. When we compare Australia to Spain, Spain’s big rotation is better, but their guard rotations are lacklustre, and that is a huge advantage for Australia. Canada’s starters could be an issue for Australia, but their bench is much thinner than the ”Kangooros’”. There is also no Jamal Murray for the ”Mapleleafs”, so Shai will have pressure on his back.
In the semifinals, Australia should have a lighter job. Their projected opponent is unclear. Several teams will fight for that spot: Serbia, Dominican Republic, Italy, Lithuania, Greece, and Montenegro. All of those squads shouldn’t be a problem.
In the finals, their opponent should be the powerhouse, the United States of America. Remember when Australia led against the USA at the Olympics? They had a lead for a whopping 21 minutes of the game, and until the last two minutes of the third quarter, the USA lead was in single digits. Now, Australia won’t have Landale, but overall, it will be a much better squad than one in 2021.
While Patty Mills is older, Josh Giddey will play, and Josh Green and Thybulle are much more experienced. Also, Dante Exum revived his career playing for Partizan in the Euroleague and could be an X-factor in the World Cup.
If Australia has ever had a chance to beat the USA, it is now, when they are fielding their B team. Of course, anything can happen and Australia could end 2nd in group K of the 2nd stage, so they could face off against the USA even in the semifinals, but to win the gold, they will need to beat them and they certainly have a case.
Germany FIBA World Cup 2023 Analysis
For Germany, there are two things to look at: first, they won against Canada and lost to them by one point in overtime, and they played an equal game against the USA in the preparations. That is a remarkable feat, even though those are just preparation games, their squad is led by Dennis Schroeder and Franz Wagner, accompanied by Daniel Theis and Mo Wagner.
Most of their roster can shoot well from the three-point range, and they are active at off-ball movement, which generates a lot of easy scoring opportunities. Also, Franz Wagner and Schroeder are matchup nightmares, especially Franz cause he has the height of a centre but can score like he is a guard.
