The Denver Nuggets finished top of the Western Conference this year with a 53-29 record and they couldn’t have asked for a better playoff path. They easily dismantled the Minnesota Timberwolves in 5 games before facing the Phoenix Suns in the conference semifinals. Many expected the Suns to come out on top, but Mike Malone’s squad got the job done in 6 games. The Nuggets then went on to sweep the Los Angeles Lakers and win the Western Conference for the first time in the team’s history. Nikola Jokic was pronounced the MVP of the conference and they enjoyed a nice rest period for more than a week.
The Denver Nuggets have only played 15 games this offseason, but are by far the best-performing side, ranking 1st in net rating as well as netting a 12-3 record. Their defence hasn’t been the best this year, but they have made significant improvements compared to the regular season and now have a 111.7 defensive rating. Their offence has been on fire, ranking 1st in rating with 119.7 and averaging 116.4 points per game.
The Miami Heat have had a very bumpy road to the finals but they have finally arrived and are ready to fight for the title yet again. This is their 2nd finals appearance since the ‘Bubble’ season where they were dispatched by the LA Lakers. The Heat were the 8th seed this year and their performance in the postseason is nothing short of spectacular.
They beat the 1st-seed Bucks, followed by the New York Knicks and their toughest task all year – the Boston Celtics. The Celtics series was a sight to behold. The Heat went up 3-0 and just when everyone thought it was all over, the Celtics bounced back and evened out the series. Still, coach Spoelstra was able to rally his troops and win game 7 with an impressive 19-point margin.
