Dallas appears to have turned a corner of late, with wins over Phoenix and Denver, yet this is a team is at a vast talent disadvantage on Friday night. Milwaukee is a juggernaut, a dominant defence and overpowering offence with its big three back together. The Mavericks still lack size, which is not great news when you’re facing two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Bucks have been a great defence for a long time, but their profile on that end of the floor has changed. Previously willing to give up threes, the Bucks are now third in three-point rate allowed, and still does a great job at protecting the rim thanks to Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez. Only one team shoots more threes than Dallas, which is hardly surprising with Luka Doncic running the show.
Dallas is short on players who can create a shot other than Doncic and Spencer Dinwiddie. They need a lot of catch-and-shoot threes to fall if they are to compete with the elite teams. Milwaukee does not enable many such shots, and they have great options to put on Doncic in Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday.

The Mavericks defence takes away a fair number of threes, too, and they generally prevent players getting to the basket, placing 11th in percentage of shots conceded in the restricted area. Their lack of rim protection is a problem, however, as they place in the bottom five in opponent efficiency at the cup. Antetokounmpo, of course, will take advantage.
Milwaukee won by nine when these teams met at Fiserv Forum last month. They also got the win in this matchup last season. While they have had the odd slip up in 2022-23, the Bucks have been a force to be reckoned with. It has been the case for a couple of years that they are almost unstoppable when they have all of their core players available.
