BYU COUGARS VS UCF KNIGHTS PICKS AND PREDICTION
So, you know me by now. How many times have I mentioned my Thinkdog mentality over the last few years? It goes way beyond college hoops, but tonight it is going to the Knights because I am amazed that we get to splash a double-digit dog in the pot tonight!
Excuse me? BYU has to beat the Knights by 11 or more to cover the line tonight, and I am not convinced that will happen at all. I have watched so many UCF games this season, and I don’t even need to look over their recent scores to know that they have played so many close games this campaign.
I guess I have to go look so I can give you the exact numbers, so let me prove my point.
First of all, these two are now conference mates in the Big 12, so their first-ever meeting happened on January 13 and it was a 5-point game, 63 – 58 on the Knights’ court. Did you happen to notice that the Knights took down Kansas in their previous game before their encounter with BYU? All right, maybe they got a little too excited over earning a win over a top-5 ranked team in the Nation as 7-point home dogs, so they forgot that BYU is pretty damn good too! Hey, this is no fade of BYU, okay, this is me having the confidence that the Knights can simply hang around all night and not take a thumping, even in Provo.
UCF is 13 – 9 against the line overall this season, but they are 7 – 2 in Big 12 play over their last nine conference games. I get that Houston made UCF look pretty bad with that 42-point shutdown performance, but Houston is playing quite a campaign this year, so let’s not compare apples to Oranges.
BYU hung tough with Baylor despite losing by eight points last week, and a loss at Texas Tech this past Saturday was a 7-point game as well. Have you noticed that in 10 conference games this year, the only game that UCF was favoured was against a pretty bad West Virginia squad?
The Knights have been fighting as underdogs since Big 12 play started, so it’s not like they haven’t been bringing it every night because of the line setters.
Also, if you are into the recent matchup stuff, on February 3, the Knights took down Oklahoma, 74 – 63, and three days later the Sooners dropped an 82 – 66 thumping to the Cougars!
BYU has not done well trying to cover conference games this campaign, as they are only 3 – 7 ATS against Big 12 opponents. It hasn’t stopped them from featuring seven players averaging over 9 PPG, and that is pretty impressive in the landscape of college hoops. Offensively, the Cougars are putting up some ridiculous numbers overall this year, but that does factor in all of the non-conference stuff and that weighs heavy on those stats!
Keep in mind that BYU has only scored over 80 points three times in Big 12 play, but yet you see that gaudy 83.1 PPG average so it blindly influences people who just read trends and numbers.
I see this as a close game with two teams that are only a game apart in the Big 12 standings, even if is just a 5 – 5 and 4 – 6 race in the bottom half of the table, respectively.
I will be watching this one without a doubt to reconfirm that UCF plays tight games, and I am expecting a low-scoring game if I am being honest. UCF is not about to get in an up-and-down race to 90 points with BYU, because they can’t do it! They are not built that way because they are only scraping out 71.2 PPG overall this year, and that does include some cupcakes in their non-conference schedule.
Here is a stat for you. UCF has only scored more than 74 points six times the entire year, and they are 13 – 9 with 22 games in the books. The only way they can hang around with BYU is by keeping this a game in the high 60s to low 70s, and I expect exactly that.
Here it comes… 76 – 69, and I’ll end up watching a 7-point game happen with my fist in the air when we pocket the ticket! I hope you scooped up my Monday night offer on Texas Tech because those Red Raiders started our week off with a big win over Kansas! Thank you!
