Toronto Blue Jays vs New York Yankees Best Bet: Thursday, May 18th

The Toronto Blue Jays and NY Yankees will be playing the final game of a 4-game set on Thursday, and a favourable pitching matchup could lead to a high-scoring night in Canada. Our resident baseball expert Ej Garr has his eyes on the total for Thursday, so let’s take it to the diamond and see what the best of the day turns out to be.

The Jays and Yanks will be wrapping up their 4-game series on Thursday night, and the Rogers Centre crowd will likely be treated to a high-scoring affair.

The Yankees are sending Nestor Cortez Jr. to the mound to wrap up this series, and his confidence of late has been shattered to pieces. We can start with his last outing against the Rays and work our way back to April 20 covering 5 appearances.

In his last start against Tampa Bay, Cortez didn’t even make it out of the 5th inning allowing 6 earned runs which were capped off by another grand slam against him. For the second time in his last 3 starts, Cortez has given up a granny, and the walks are all becoming a major problem. Through only 42 ⅓ innings pitched in the 2023 campaign, Cortez has already allowed 13 walks and 7 home runs, and he’s allowing a hit an inning as well on pace to put up his worst campaign since joining the Yanks.

The 5.53 ERA for Cortez will not likely be coming down tonight even though the Jays’ offense has been relatively quiet this entire series to this point.

The Yankees won games 1 and 2 of this series despite neither of their starting pitchers making it past the third inning. Aaron Boone sent a reliever to start Monday’s game and Jimmy Cordero only hurled two innings before being pulled from the game which the Yankees won, 7 – 4. Domingo German only lasted 3 innings on Tuesday for the Yanks, but the bullpen saved the day as New York picked up a second win to start the series, 6 – 3.

I am sitting at home watching Gerrit Cole pitch tonight’s game and he has only surrendered a single hit through the first 3 innings in a 0 – 0 game. Cole is the only dependable starter that the Yanks can rely on every fifth day, although he has run into his own tough luck of late. Cole has been left with a no-decision from four of his last five starts entering Wednesday night’s start, and he had given up two home runs in both of his last two outings entering tonight’s game.

Jose Berrios is listed as the probable starter for Toronto tonight, and he has, at least, done a better job than he did to start the campaign. After getting shelled in his first two starts against Kansas City and the Angels, Berrios has gotten his ERA down to a semi-respectable 4.70.

All of this leads me to this total that sits at only 9, and the Over is the suggestion I have to make for this game with an even money offer on the table. I was thinking about jumping the line up to 10 because the price is right up my alley, but I also don’t want to put myself out of a position to push this straight 9.

I think both of these starters can give up 4 runs apiece before we even get to the 6th inning, and that will put us in an early position to at worst push our action at that point. I don’t think they will stop there because I have zero faith that Cortez can pitch his way out of a paper bag right now, so expect a Jays win and runs to come in droves for the Rogers Centre faithful in attendance!
