New York Yankees vs New York Mets Run Total Best Bet: The Gotham City Rivalry Continued
New York Yankees vs New York Mets Best Bet: Tuesday, July 26th
The battle for Gotham City will be renewed as the Yankees and Mets will play a brief, 2-game series at Citi Field starting on Tuesday night. Since our resident baseball expert lives just 70 miles from the venue and grew up in the area, Ej will be covering both of these games over the next couple of days, and he is eyeing the total in the 1st inning for the best bet of the day.

That’s right, I was born in New Rochelle, grew up in Larchmont, and I have been to Yankee Stadium more times than I can even think about remembering. I have been a Yankees fan since 1976 when they got swept by the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series, and I have rooted against the Mets for just as long! Luckily, we won the 1977 and 1978 World Series, so I got over that loss quickly.
I really can’t say I hate the Mets as much as it’s just a rivalry here in New York and it’s one or the other and no in between. The rivalry took bigger life now that we get to play each other during Interleague action and the 2000 World Series added to that. Make no mistake that I have been to Shea Stadium and Citi Field enough times to lose track of that as well because I just love going to baseball games and being in the park. In fact, can you guess where I will be on Tuesday night?
I will be sitting on the 3rd base side at the Hudson Valley Renegades game as they play the affiliate from Brooklyn. Since the Renegades are the Yankees Single-A team and the Brooklyn club is a Mets affiliate, I will be seeing some of the expected up-and-coming talent, which I love to do. Minor League baseball is a blast but let me get back to this big boy game in the Bronx.
I know one thing I don’t expect and that’s seeing a dude cross home plate in the 1st inning. I opened up the Pinnacle lines and saw 1.98 on the Under 0.5 run to open the game and that’s a yes from me! I see this being a scoreless game at least into the 3rd inning because Jordan Montgomery and Taijuan Walker can both hold their own early, and we might see them both go deep into this game.
The Mets have not been hitting the ball all that well of late, as we saw them only score one run in both of their games returning from the All-Star layoff before breaking out on Sunday for 8 runs. Joe Musgrove seemingly had control of the Mets bats until the Polar Bear decided to deposit a ball deep into the outfield stands in the 6th inning.
Musgrove got lit up pretty good after 5 clean innings to start the ballgame, but then the wheels fell off and he was only able to record one out in the 6th inning before being yanked off the mound.
Taijuan Walker (7 – 2; 2.55 ERA) is having an outstanding campaign for the Mets and the 4 homers allowed is always something you know I am looking at all the time. Being that I only give out totals around here, I am aware of every starting pitcher’s ability to keep the ball in the park. Walker is doing a bang-up job of getting out of trouble and limiting the damage and I expect him to come out firing strikes and getting outs early.
Jordan Montgomery (3 – 2; 3.24 ERA) throws his off-speed stuff a lot of late and it makes it tough on yourself when you are known for going to the same pitch too often. His slider is effective but his fastball cannot blow too many people away and it’s why he needs to throw a variety of other stuff. He is crafty as a left-hander can be when he is on his game, so I hope he just has his stuff together early for us tonight.
Both teams had Monday off to relax but this is a big series for each of these teams too. The Yankees are battling for the best record in the American League and the Mets are fighting with Atlanta for the NL East title. There is no more ‘must-win, can’t lose’ chatter around the dugout because every loss a team picks up from here is a setback that could be costly and tough to make up easily.
I honestly expect the scoring to open up as the game starts to flow because the weather will be balmy and warm, and this park is one tiny little venue. I am calling for a 0 – 0 score until the 3rd inning, at least, and that is why I am offering the 1st inning Under 0.5 runs with almost even money on the action.
New York Yankees vs New York Mets Best Bet
Jordan Montgomery and Taijuan Walker are going to get through the order before the hits and runs start to add up so expect a low-scoring game early and things to open up late. The Yankees bullpen is a bit of a mess right now and the Mets should be able to score some late runs to likely win this game. Hmm hmm, I said that. It will be a 5 – 4 Mets win but none of that scoring will start early so we can cash a ticket nice and early and think about the Mets ML as an option as well.
