Now, we have 12 players making the list because of the 3-way tie at the bottom of the table. If I am being honest, to see Acuna, Jr. and Juan Soto on the bottom of the board after what we just saw at the All-Star game, these lines could change.
Juan Soto took home the Home Run Derby contest at the All-Star Game festivities but the big issue he might have is that the Nationals are simply not playing well. Granted, the voters for the NL MVP do not just concentrate on the team record of the players, but it helps when you are playing with a club that is doing well.
Now, we might be able to give Ronald Acuña Jr. the Comeback Player of the Year award after blowing out his ACL just two days before the 2021 all-Star game. He is not only back but he is playing at a high level once again making the All-Star team and hoping to have a big second half of the season in Atlanta.
Let’s talk about some players appearing at the top of the odds board, and I will start with Manny Machado. This lingering ankle injury he is dealing with is a concern for me, and I am almost certain he will end up missing some time over the dog days of summer. He is lucky that he plays out west where the conditions are not as harsh as the heat and humidity of the east coast weather which he is accustomed to having tenure in Baltimore.
It is amazing to me how Kyle Schwarber really just caught fire with the Phillies after the firing of Joe Girardi. Schwarber was struggling in the early going, but he is now on pace to smash all of his personal best season records and a big finish for the Phillies could depend on his bat staying hot.
The Polar Bear, Pete Alonso, broke the New York Mets team record for RBI before the All-Star break with 78 runs knocked in. After winning the Home Run Derby in 2019 and 2021 (There was no event in 2020) Alonso didn’t fare as well in Los Angeles this year), Alonso is up to 24 homers and he certainly can take advantage of the big media market in New York. A 50-Bomb campaign could give him a damn good chance to win the NL MVP Award but this year I think the writing is on the wall.
Paul Goldschmidt’s .330 batting average is among the best in baseball and he is on pace to surpass his personal best record of 36 homers in one season. He accomplished that feat twice in his career (2013 & 2017), and as long as he stays on the field he could certainly topple a few of his personal best stats this year.
The name I cannot believe is as far down the totem pole as he appears, is the dude playing in Los Angeles that everyone just watched have a big influence on the All-Star game for the NL. Mookie Betts drove in the first run of the game and he scored the second run of the game as the National League jumped out to a 2 – 0 early lead against the AL. Betts has appeared in six consecutive All-Star games and he is the only player in baseball history to have hit 3-home runs in a single game on 6 different occasions.
Should the Dodgers continue to cruise their way to the NL West title as they are on pace to do at the moment, Betts will have an amazing chance to earn another MVP Award, and he can become one of the rare members of the list to have earned an MVP in both leagues. Back in 2018 with the Red Sox, Betts won the World Series with Boston, earned a Gold Glove award, took home the Silver Slugger award, and he won the AL MVP which made him the only player in the history of the American League to have pulled that feat off.
Frank Robinson is officially the only player to have earned the honour in the American and National League. At odds of 13.00 with the season Betts is putting up thus far, I am suggesting you splash the pot on Mookie to join Robinson while creating more history in his career.
MLB National League MVP Best Bet
For me, it comes down to the fact that Betts has won an MVP Award, he’s on a team that is playing extremely well, and his all-around game makes him the perfect candidate to take home this year’s NL MVP Award. His influence in the Dodgers lineup is so big at the top of the order even though he has plenty of support around him.
