Minnesota Twins vs San Diego Padres Best Bet: Tuesday, May 9th

The San Diego Padres will make their first trip to Minnesota in 6 years as they take on the Twins for a 3-game set to start the week. Both teams enjoyed Monday off although they are each carrying a 2-game losing skid into this series, so a day of rest to recharge for this Interleague matchup on Tuesday might come at a good time. Our resident baseball expert Ej Garr has a pair of player props in mind for this duel at Target Field, so let’s take it to the diamond and see what he has in store for us today.

Minnesota Twins vs San Diego Padres Preview

May 10, 00:40 (UK time)

The Twins and Padres both lost their Saturday and Sunday games before getting Monday off to travel, although the Twins are still ahead in the NL Central Division table entering the series.

The Padres didn’t help the Twins’ cause by losing two of three games to the Guardians this past weekend, as they are the team trailing the Twins in the Division standings. And by the same token, the Dodgers earned two wins over the Twins this past weekend which didn’t help the Padres cause either, HA!

So, now they meet for a rare series in Minnesota since this is the first time in 6 years the Padres have traveled to the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The two teams have played a total of 10 games in Minnesota since Interleague play began, and the Twins hold a 7 – 3 advantage. They played a 4-game series which they split on each other’s field back in 2017, and all they did was win one game apiece at home and away to split the series, 2 – 2.

The history between them will have a zero factor in what will happen today, but I know the people need some numbers to chew on once in a while so there, you have some now, HA!

What will factor into today’s outcome will be the starting pitching matchup we are expecting to get, as Louie Varland is listed as the probable starter against Michael Wacha. Louie Varland simply cannot keep the ball in the park, as he has made a small sample size of two starts this year, and he has already given up 4 home runs.

Amazingly, his first start against the Yankees back on April 14 wasn’t a complete disaster, as he did surrender 3 home runs but they were the only earned runs he allowed in the outing. That’s not all that shabby considering the Twins won the game, 4 – 3. Varland’s second start on May 3 came against the White Sox, as he again gave up a dinger but only allowed 4 ER through 4 ⅔ innings.

While Varland’s ERA is up to 5.91, Wacha’s ERA isn’t much better at 5.46 so what can we expect to see tonight? I have two prop bets for this matchup so take advantage of them if you please!

Minnesota Twins vs San Diego Padres Best Bet

First of all, William Hill is offering even money odds on the Over 2.5 Earned Runs for Varland against San Diego on Tuesday. Until I see him limit those long balls, and prove he can not want to be so on the plate things will not change anytime soon. He is limiting the walks, which is good but if you are always around the plate the batter’s eye becomes much bigger while much easier to expect something in the zome to hit.

Secondly, Xander Bogaerts’ total bases count is listed at +1.5 and WillHill is gifting us a 2.25 on that action. I think he will surely crack a double to settle that dust with one swing of the bat at any point of this game, so tuck that in your pocket too!

  • Selection: Xander Bogaerts Over 1.5 Total Bases
  • Best odds: 2.25 (William Hill)
  • Stakes: 4/10
  • Bonus Bet: Louie Varland Over 2.5 Earned Runs (2.00 @ W.Hill)

Odds as of 9:00 am May 9, 2023. Odds may now differ.
