Miami Marlins vs New York Mets Best Bet: Doubling Down
Miami Marlins vs New York Mets Best Bet: Friday, March 31st
After an opening day winning offer from our resident baseball expert Ej Garr, we turn the page to day two of the new 2023 MLB campaign. Going back to the same well, it looks like Ej is picking on the poor Marlins again because the line setters haven’t seemed to figure out just how bad of a team they are. Let’s slide into the diamond and pick out another gem to end the week!

The Mets and Max Scherzer barely outdid the Marlins and Sandy Alcantara on Thursday to open the new 2023 MLB campaign, and it went exactly as I had predicted it would happen. Both starters pitched into the 6th inning but the Mets’ offense did just enough to muster up a win to open the season, 5 – 3.
The Mets scored two runs in the top of the 7th inning after Scherzer had gotten through 6 innings allowing 3 earned runs in his first campaign start. Brandon Nimmo had been dealing with Knee and ankle injuries leading up to opening day as I mentioned yesterday, but he came through in a big way to lift the Mets to a 40 – 22 opening-day record.
Nimmo knocked in the two winning runs in the top of the 7th inning in a 3 – 3 game with a double to deep center field giving him 3 RBI for the day.
With Edwin Diaz out for the season from his torn ACL injury at the WBC, David Robertson looks like the guy who will be called upon to close games for the Mets. The well-traveled veteran might not have the nastiest stuff on baseball, and it will be interesting to see if he can hold up to a long season.
The line setters haven’t caught on to the fact that the Marlins’ offense still doesn’t have enough firepower to win baseball games. I said it yesterday and I will say it again, when I see this team prove to anyone that they can hit a baseball with any consistency, I will fade the Marlins every night until then.
Spring training proved to be nothing but a full-blown disaster for a team who is undoubtedly in rebuilding mode and the only thing we’ve seen built is a log that smells like… Wait, I’ll get in trouble for saying that! HA!
At 1.90, I see no reason why we would shy away from taking the Mets to start the campaign 2 – 0 against a bad Marlins team. David Peterson and Jesus Luzardo are expecting to be taking the mound for each team, and that again to me is a wash. Neither of the two pitchers has tremendous stuff, and they will cancel each other out as was the case on Thursday.
That means the offenses will be the deciding factor. Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso both went 0 for 4 on Thursday, and I have a feeling that will all reverse against the lefty Luzardo today.

Until we get proven wrong, fading the Marlins is right! Their spring training numbers did indeed carry over into the new campaign and 3 runs will not be enough to beat the Mets again today! Why these odds are not more like 1.83 is beyond me, so we’ll take the two gifts on back-to-back days riding the Mets.
