Houston Astros vs Seattle Mariners Game 2 Best Bet: Thursday, October 13th

The Mariners were on the verge of earning a Game 1 win until a 3-run walk-off home run gave the Astros a 1 – 0 ALDS lead on Tuesday. Our resident baseball pundit Ej Garr made the right call for game 1 and now he looks to make another bold call for Game 2 in Houston.

I know, I wanted the win too because I have Seattle to take the series, but we still covered the +1.5 run line and came away with the cash. When Seattle jumped all over Justin Verlander I think everyone who read my game 1 preview was smiling with their money on Seattle to cover the handicap and up early.

Seattle pretty much punched Verlander in his face as the 39-year-old once again failed in the post-season. If you recall me mentioning, the last time Verlander was on a post-season mound, it was the 2019 World Series and he was 0 – 2 having to watch the Nationals win their first World Series title.

I almost turned off the game when the Seattle manager brought in Robbie Ray to get the final out of the game on Tuesday. I think I heard that crack of Yordan Alvarez’s bat in my head about 5 times before Ray threw that ball before it landed in downtown Houston. In fact, I hear they just reported some strange white thing flying through the air an hour ago on local Houston TV, and it was that baseball still going, right? What a blast it was, majesterial, even.

So, now the Ms need to rebound and since I have Seattle to take this series, I hope that this time the late blast doesn’t change the outcome of the game as it did on Tuesday.

When the Mariners brought over Luis Castillo from the Reds before the trade deadline, can I say how pissed I was that the Yankees didn’t make more of an effort to bring him to New York? I would have given that dude half of Manhattan to come here to the Big Apple, but Seattle won the sweepstakes and now they get to reap the rewards.

Castillo (4 – 2; 3.17 ERA in AL) gave up less than one earned run in 6 of his last 9 starts, and even though he was only 4 – 2 in 11 starts with the Ms, he gets plenty of run support and I expect he’ll get some again today. Did you catch his last start against Toronto? He only allowed 6 hits and went 7⅓ IP en route to a 4 – 0 win against one volatile offense over there in Toronto.

Seattle is winning game 2 and going back home level 1 – 1 in this ALDS. Castillo is going to pitch the post-season game of his life and this is why Seattle brought him here. Yeah, I know!

The line setters expect Houston to go up 2 – 0 slapping 1.65 chalk on the home team, and that’s a result of the fashion they won Game 1 and the fact that Framber Valdez (17 – 6; 2.82 ERA) is on the bump. Valdez needs to make up for a terrible post-season last year as his ERA was 7.78 giving up 6 home runs in 5 starts.

Valdez looked fantastic in his final tuneup for the post-season, as he shut down the Phillies allowing only 2 hits through 5 innings pitched. I think the concern we all see is his depth of starts lately. He is barely getting through 5 innings lately, and that might put some stress on the Stros pen. They won’t be scared to help provide a lift, but it won’t be enough.

I expected Seattle to hang around and keep Game 1 close, at least, and they ended up doing just that. I didn’t want to see their 7 – 3 Game 1 lead evaporate into an 8 – 7 loss to cover that +1.5, but it just means we need a big result from the Castillo today.

At 2.50, I can handle expecting Seattle to get back in the series and go home to host their first playoff game since 2001. Those fans are going to be insanely bonkers when they get back there, and I think we’ll be deadlocked at 1 – 1 when we get there. Not to mention, welcome to Value City, honorable Mayor at your service!
