The Braves and Phillies will play the first of two games on the MLB Playoff schedule for Wednesday after a thrilling Game 1 on Tuesday night. The National League pair of Game 2 affairs will take place today and the American League will have the day off.
The Phillies snatched an all-important road win to open the NLDS in Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon, although the Braves didn’t go away quietly. What seemed like a semi-comfortable 7 – 3 Phillies lead suddenly turned into a 1-run game, but the Phils eventually took the win in Game 1 and are now looking to take full command of the series.
I didn’t miss a pitch of Game 1, and if you saw what I saw you watched an aggressive Phillies offense serving every fastball that Max Fried threw getting hit hard while finding green grass. It was clear to Smoltz and Davis in the announcer’s booth as it was to all of us that the Phillies were looking fastball and not letting any of them go to waste.
The Phillies came to bat with bad intentions, and their lumber got meaner as Fried got more frustrated trying to pound the strike zone. Fried never figured out, nor had the time to figure out, how to take the Phils’ aggression, and go to his off-speed stuff to keep them out of balance. When you see the approach early, an experienced starter and his battery mate need to make the adjustment sooner than later.
Let’s go on a limb and say that Nick Castellanos and the dude wearing the #3 jersey might not see as many heaters in Game 2 as they did in Game 1. Unless Kyle Wright wants to challenge them all afternoon, it will just be another long day for Braves fans.
Kyle Wright (21 – 5; 3.19 ERA) has got to be the biggest surprise to everyone who follows this organization. This dude had made a total of 14 starts in 3 years before the 2022 campaign got underway. With 30 starts in the books, he is considered an ace on this staff just like that, and this team needs that right now.
Let’s keep in mind that Eddie Rosario and Freddie Freeman are not here to do as much damage as they did last year, and that was quite a bit! Rosario was constantly leading off, getting on base, and making life difficult for everyone en route to a World Series title. Freeman is obviously in Los Angeles and you can see his game later tonight after this affair is done with.
Zack Wheeler (12 – 7; 2.71 ERA) has the assignment of taking the Phils back to Philadelphia up 2 games to love, and we know he will be up to the challenge. Over his last 4 starts, Wheeler did not give up more than 2 hits to the Jays, Nationals, and Cardinals, and he only gave up one earned run to the Cubs over those 4 outings.

The Phillies couldn’t possibly go into Atlanta and win Game 2, right? The line setters have the Braves set to win this game and level the series, but that’s not happening today. I trust Wheeler to lift the Phils to victory and the offense will do the rest behind him to give them a 2 – 0 NLDS lead going home.
