COLORADO AVALANCHE STANLEY CUP WINNER ODDS
TI mentioned above the Colorado Avalanche have been near or at the top of the odds to win the Stanley Cup all season, and what a race it has become in the Central Division table. At 8.00 and tied with the Knights to go on and win the Stanley Cup, Dallas has emerged to join the Avalanche at the top of the standings tied with 40 points through December 20.
While consuming a 12 – 4 record at home, the road has been a place of struggle for this Avalanche squad. There is no better proof than the loss to the Blackhawks on December 19 as considerable favs. As I update this piece, the Avalanche has lost its last 5 road games approaching the end of the 2023 portion of the campaign.
Colorado has two more road games remaining on the schedule for December, as they will visit Arizona and Seattle on the 27th and 29th, so let’s see if they fix their issues away from home soon.
Nate MacKinnon only needs two points to reach the 50 mark, although the 14 goals trails both Mikko Rantanen and Valeri Nichushkin who lead the team with 15 tallies. Nichushkin has been in a groove over his last 5 games scoring 5 goals with 3 helpers, and Rantanen has followed suit with 6 goals and 9 assists over his last 5 games.
The only real concern that Avalanche fans are having lately is on the defensive side of the ice because the offense ranks 4th in the NHL putting up 4.6 GPG. The Avs rank 12th in the NHL allowing 3.1 GPG, and they have only had three clean sheets through 32 games.
Alexandar Georgiev is playing his third season as the Avalanche netminder, and he is on pace to produce another 50-start year. With 25 of those starts already in the books, his 2.97 GAA could improve in a Western Conference filled with goal scorers.
VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS CUP WINNER ODDS
The Vegas Golden Knights and Colorado Avalanche are deadlocked at the top of the current odds to win the 2023-24 NHL Stanley Cup, each listed at 8.00.
I will remind you that when the season was about to get underway back in October, Colorado was 2nd on the list behind the Carolina Hurricanes who have fallen well off the pace. While the Canes are struggling to get on track, the Avalanche have remained among the favourites to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup in June.
While the Avs have been doing their thing, the Golden Knights have jumped from 6th in the pre-season odds to the top of the heap to win a second Cup is as many years. The defending Champs have the best record in the NHL, and 47 points has them just a single point above Vancouver for the lead in the Pacific Division table.
While the Knights have been offensively sound ranking 9th in goals scored, shots taken, and power play percentage, the defensive side of the ice needs more credit for their success in 2023.
The Knights rank 3rd in the NHL allowing only 2.5 goals per game, and their penalty-killing unit fights off 85.9% of the situations a man down, good for 5th in the NHL.
Logan Thompson and Adin Hill have essentially split goaltending responsibilities this year, and the two of them have been dominant thus far. Hill is sporting an astounding 1.93 GAA from 15 appearances, and both players have earned 10 wins apiece.
BOSTON BRUINS STANLEY CUP WINNER ODDS
When the season was about to get underway, the Boston Bruins had odds of 15.00 to win this year’s Stanley Cup, and now if you want to bet on the Bs you’ll only get 9.80 odds for that action. No one will forget, especially in the locker room, what happened last year, and despite some key pieces of the puzzle leaving for retirement Boston is playing extremely well again.
Now 6 points clear of the Maple Leafs for the Atlantic Division lead, the Bruins have still only lost 5 games which leads the NHL. The Blackhawks and Sharks have already lost 20 games apiece, and only 77 goals allowed the Bruins to easily lead the Eastern Conference in keeping pucks out of their net.
We will see if the line moves again in January, as Boston has gone to overtime in their last four games while three of those affairs ended up as losses. The point from each outing is still worth something, but Boston will be playing five of their next 6 games on the road and four of those teams are going to challenge Boston for points.
David Pastrnak is just a constant for this organization, and after putting up prolific numbers a season ago he is carrying this team in 2023. Pastrnak pocketed 61 goals while helping Boston earn the best record in Hockey history, but his supporting cast still has many questions to answer.
We all know that Brad Marchand is going to produce another solid campaign, although he is 16 points behind Pastrnak and the numbers dwindle significantly behind them both.
Boston has also attacked this year with two goaltenders who are splitting responsibilities, as Linus Ullmark (16) and Jeremy Swayman (15) have started all 31 games for the Bruins. Swayman’s 2.06 GAA is a .80 improvement over Ullmark’s 2,86 GAA, but no one kills penalties better than the Bruins. Ranked #1 overall in the NHL, Boston fights off a league-leading 88.3% of their man disadvantages, and the 2.4 GPG allowed ranks 4th in the NHL.
LOS ANGELES KINGS CUP WINNER ODDS
Why am I bringing up the LA Kings to win the Stanley Cup? Well, if you read my NHL Futures Betting Preview back in October, I told you that the Kings might be worth a longshot chance to win this year’s title.
The Kings’ odds to win this year’s trophy came in at 23.00 before the season got underway, and now the line setters are noticing. At 14.00 on the current list of odds to win the 2024 Stanley Cup, the Kings have been road warriors in 2023 sporting a 13 – 1 – 1 record in their travels. That is just ridiculous!!
While Boston’s 77 goals allowed lead the Eastern Conference, the LA Kings have been the stingiest club in the NHL. With only 68 pucks finding their net and 101 goals scored the Kings are appearing in the top 5 of almost every offensive and defensive category.
Ranked 3rd in scoring putting up 3.6 GPG, the Kings rank 4th in the NHL producing 33.5 shots per game, Just as Boston addresses the defensive side of the ice, no one has defended the net better than the Kings as they rank #1 allowing only 2.4 GPG. With the 3rd best penalty-killing unit in hockey, the Kings rank 2nd in shots allowed per game, and that makes Cam Talbot and Pheonix Colby’s lives much easier between the pipes.
Talbot has made 20 starts to Calbot’s 8, and Calbot has certainly earned top billing carrying a 2.08 GAA this year. That’s his best since his rookie year with the NY Rangers although he only made 12 starts and has bounced around from team to team for 10 years now. This is Calbot’s first year in Los Angeles, and he seems to wear out his welcome wherever he goes.
If he keeps this pace up and gets the Kings deep into the playoffs, maybe he can unpack a bag or two before moving on again. I still think that it is worth a bet to take the Kings to win the Cup as I did in October, so if they do win the trophy don’t forget I told you they could!
