Xabi Alonso
Xabi Alonso is an intriguing choice as the next Liverpool manager. The former Reds midfielder obviously has a strong affinity with the club after spending five enjoyable seasons at Anfield as a player. He departed for Real Madrid and enjoyed a remarkable career as a player and it appears he’s on a similar trajectory in the dugout.
After some mixed success with Real Sociedad B, Alonso appears to have found a home in Germany and Bayer Leverkusen. His side is engaged in a Bundesliga title race with Bayern Munich at the time of writing.
Alonso’s work in Germany has attracted the attention of another Liverpool icon, John Barnes who praised the Spaniard in a recent interview.
“I am not at all surprised at how well Xabi Alonso has developed because he is an intelligent person,” Barnes told Wettbasis.
“He understands football, he understands the players. He’s modern, he understands the systems.
“He has a great story in terms of the places he has played and the family he comes from. He played in a football family for a long time, so it doesn’t surprise me at all.”
“What he’s doing now doesn’t surprise me at all and I’m sure he can continue to do so. “I don’t want to say that Leverkusen will win the Bundesliga, but when it comes to maximizing the team’s potential, I don’t think anyone could have done a better job,
“There have been many players who have played under top managers but were not good managers. So you really have to have it within yourself to understand what you want. Xabi Alonso has played under good managers, but he is his own man and he knows how he wants his team to play and they are playing attractive and successful football at the moment.”
Leverkusen play some fantastic football. They’ve average over 2.7 goals scored per match and play with a flair and tactical flexibility.
He’s an impressive young coach which is why he’s amongst the favourites in the next Liverpool manager odds. It would not be a surprise to see him in the Anfield dugout next season.
Pep Lijnders
Pep Lijnders was the frontrunner in the next Liverpool manager odds running. The 40-year-old Dutch coach is currently Klopp’s assistant at Anfield. He’s previously worked at Porto before moving to Liverpool in 2014 under Brendan Rodgers. Lijnders outlasted the Northern Irishman and, barring the 2017-18 season, has served at Anfield ever since.
That brief hiatus was Lijnders’ only previous experience in the hotseat. He departed for his native Netherlands and NEC, His stint lasted just one season after failing to earn promotion from the second division in the country.
It’s natural for a well-known assistant to be amongst the frontrunners once a manager is set to leave on amicable terms. It was always wise to stay away from Lijnders and the club has confirmed that the Dutchman will not succeed Klopp in the hotseat and will instead leave Anfield in the summer alongside fellow assistant Peter Krawietz and elite development coach Vitor Matos.
Steven Gerrard
The oft-called ‘next Liverpool manager’ is probably not at the top of every Liverpool fan’s list of targets to replace Jurgen Klopp.
Steven Gerrard’s managerial stock has probably never been lower. Early success at Rangers was followed by a less-than-impressive stint at Aston Villa. Every win current boss Unai Emery earns at the club just chips away at Gerrard’s reputation as a boss.
The former Liverpool captain has recently signed a new contract with his current club Al-Ettifaq. He’d most likely jump at the chance to manage his boyhood club but is the feeling mutual? The betting advice is to stay away from Gerrard in the next Liverpool manager odds.
Roberto De Zerbi
If Liverpool want a domestic appointment then who better than Roberto De Zerbi? The Italian’s stock is high following a remarkable 18 months at Brighton. De Zerbi led the Seagulls to a lofty 6th-place finish and European football. He did it a tactical and technical maturity that seemed to outfox some of the best coaches in the league.
Brighton play some fantastic football and De Zerbi has already been mooted as a possible replacement for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
Could Liverpool steal the march and make him the next Reds boss? There’s a reason why he’s amongst the favourites in the next Liverpool manager odds…
Why is Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool?
Klopp is set to call time on his eight-plus-year stint at Anfield at the end of the season. His announcement came as a shock.
“I will leave the club at the end of the season,” Klopp told the club’s official media.
“I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment when you hear it for the first time but obviously I can’t explain it.
“I’m running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I think I know I will have to announce it at one point. I’m absolutely fine now but I know that I cannot do the job again and again”
The German had been in charge at Anfield since his appointment way back in October 2015. In that time, the German has won the Champions League, Premier League and the FA Cup.
List of Liverpool Managers
Jurgen Klopp was not the first and he will not be the last person to take the Anfield hotseat. The German brought plenty of success to Anfield and had the best league win percentage of any Reds boss since the club’s golden era in the late-1980s. He also brought Liverpool their first Premier League title, ending their 30-year drought.
His team are currently on course to add to that tally. BETSiE is projecting a second title for Jurgen Klopp in England in what would be the perfect send-off for the German.
