NCAA Football 2023/24 Championship Winner Odds: Wednesday, August 23rd

The 2023-24 NCAA football campaign is around the corner, and our resident college football expert Ej Garr is here to break down the NCAA Football 2023 Championship winner odds on the expectation of which team will win the Championship. This will be the final season in which four teams will compete in the FBS Playoffs, as the 2024-25 campaign will feature 12 teams participating making it much more interesting.

This year will also feature the movement of many programs into new conferences, and the landscape of college football will look even more different after this upcoming season. Until we get there, let’s talk about the big board of odds we’ll be betting on to win the 2023-24 National Championship title!

Georgia Bulldogs Favoured to Go All the Way

Let’s start this discussion with how hard it is to win three straight National Championships. The Bulldogs are back-to-back title holders, and only one team in the history of college football has ever been able to pull off the proverbial 3-peat! That was the Minnesota Golden Gophers, and they achieved that feat from 1934 to 1936.

It’s been that long since it’s happened, and I honestly do not think that this Georgia team should be this favoured to win this year’s title. Stetson ‘The Mailman’ Bennett is no longer sporting a Bulldogs jersey, and that will be giving Carson Beck the chance to take over under centre for Kirby Smart’s bunch.

Smart is entering year 8 with the Georgia program, and this year’s schedule sure does look like one that could see the Bulldogs run the table again. Last year’s 15 – 0 will be tough to top, but the Georgia running game should help ease the transition of a new starting QB, and not having to play LSU, Alabama, and Texas A&M will surely be an advantage they hope to utilize.

The offence is only returning 6 starters from a season ago, but 25 lettermen are returning on that side of the ball despite losing Bennett. Repeating as Champions would be one for the history books, but I do think we will see a change of the guard in 2023. The Bulldogs are the top contenders to go all the way this year with their NCAA Football 2023 Championship winner odds set at 3.20.

Ohio State Buckeyes & Michigan Wolverines Big 10 Battle

As you see above, Ohio State and Michigan are both listed behind Alabama with close to the same NCAA Football 2023 Championship winner odds to win this year’s National Championship.

Ohio State is a recruiting haven for the Midwest region, and Ryan Day hopes he has done enough scouting to get back to the Big Ten Title game, first. Ohio State backed into the playoff last year, but they came within a single point of taking out Georgia before falling 42 – 41 in the first semifinal game.

This year, the Buckeyes lose their hero QB C.J. Stroud to the NFL Draft (Houston), and Day has still yet to announce his starting QB for the upcoming campaign. Kyle McCord and Devin Brown are making it hard for Day to decide which of the two new faces he wants to take over the program.

There is good news for Ohio State fans out there who might be concerned about a first-year starter taking over again. Since 1951, six of the seven National titles that the Buckeyes have won all came with first-year starting QBs.

It’s an odd fact but true nonetheless, and since J.T Barrett started calling the shots back in 2014, the last 4 first -year starting QBs have all broken the school’s single-season passing efficiency record

Dwayne Haskins (2018) and Justin Fields (2019) each set a new record before Stroud did it, so maybe it’s a good thing to bring new blood into Buckeye Nation.

Michigan now has the uncomfortableness of being favourites to win the Big Ten title, as they have now shifted the tide when it comes to the rivalry with the Buckeyes. As usual, the two teams will meet on the final day of the regular season but this time around the Wolverines will play host to what should be quite a big game.

It could potentially decide which of these two programs represents the Big Ten East Division in the Big Ten Championship game. Their NCAA Football 2023 Championship winner odds are set at 11.00 and they are the 5th contenders.

The Wolverines are the team with the experienced starting QB returning this year, as JJ McCarthy enters his third season under Jim Harbaugh. McCarthy is the player from the Big Ten that has the pre-season Heisman Trophy attention around the country, although he is sitting well down the odds board when we cover that futures article later here at Expert Insights.

McCarthy will have over 145 starts on his offensive line returning to protect him, and we might see him airing out the ball much more than we are accustomed to seeing in the Big Ten Conference.

Penn State will have its say in this division battle because they play both Michigan and Ohio State during the regular season. I honestly think that everyone is losing sight of Wisconsin who brings in Tanner Mordecai from SMU this season. The Nittany Lions are going to do their best to throw a wrench in this chase for the division crown, and the Badgers have their entire offence returning around him.

USC Troyans Hoping to Represent PAC-12 in FBS Playoffs

There have only been two teams from the PAC-12 Conference to appear in the FBS Playoffs, the last being Washington in 2016 after Orgeon reached the final in 2014. That means that we have yet to see a Pac-12 Champion since the inception of the playoff in NCAA Football.

After mentioning JJ McCarthy having the potential to throw his name in the hat for the Heisman Trophy this upcoming season, the clear-cut favourite to hoist that award is Caleb Williams from USC. (I will cover more of that in my Heisman Winner piece)

Williams already has a Heisman Trophy on his shelf at home, and now he has to potential to join Archie Griffin as the only two players in NCAA football history to take two of those puppies home.

USC Head Coach Lincoln Riley has a way of just producing Heisman Trophy candidates, as he had three players win the award and one other player as a finalist. The Trojans’ offence is going to put up some magical numbers in 2023 as long as the team stays healthy, and they sure do have a great chance to finally give a Pac-12 team that ring they’ve longed for.

LSU Tigers Looking to Get Back to the Title Game

It was a magical 2019 campaign for Eddie O. and the Tigers, but he is gone and it’s been 3 years of tough going in the Bayou. The Tigers did snap back to win 10 games a season ago after two average campaigns, and the LSU fans are hoping that Jayden Daniels can do what Joe Burrow was able to do.

Burrow led the Tigers to a perfect record and a National Championship, and that included a win in Alabama that set the precedence for the year. This season, the Tigers will once again have to deal with the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, and that will assuredly be a game that has plenty of NFL scouts paying attention.

Jayden Daniels sits right behind Caleb Williams in the chase for the Heisman trophy, but navigating the SEC schedule is never an easy task. Daniels is going to blow past the 10,000-yard passing mark this season as long as he stays healthy, and his run-threat ability makes him about as versatile as it gets in NCAA football.

Daniels ripped off 885 rushing yards a year ago after spending three years at Arizona State where he accumulated 1288 rushing yards. Because of the talent in the LSU backfield coming into 2023, there might not be a 1,000-yard rusher for the Tigers this campaign.

That’s because they might have about 5 dudes toting the rock with talent throughout their backfield, and the yards will be adding up for all of them.
