Week 9 NCAA Football Best Bets: Saturday, October 29th
Is it really Week 9 already? How time flies, but that’s okay because our resident NCAA football expert is having quite a campaign of his own and he’s back to give us more. Give us more, Ej!
Ej has hand-picked a pair of games to profile that he believes will put the funds in our pockets, so let’s get to the field and see what he has in store for us this weekend.

Georgia State Panthers vs Old Dominion Monarchs Preview
October 29, 20:00 (UK time)
To the Sun Belt Conference we go, and hello again everyone, I hope your week has been outstanding. I picked this game to profile because of the line being offered on the road dog, and then I started doing more homework and it influenced me to go with the total instead.
Old Dominion is getting +3.5 points on Saturday, and when I first saw that line I thought to myself that it would be good to post another underdog this weekend. I love posting dogs as you know, but the more I kept breaking down this game the more points I saw coming our way.
Why? Man, that Georgia State defense is a complete mess, but so is Old Dominion’s so why play a side or bother with any points?
We know what Georgia State is going to do all day, and that means more running of the pigskin on the ground. The Panther offense ranks 10th in the Nation in rushing putting up 233.4 yards an outing, and the ODU rush stoppers aren’t doing much to stop the opposition. ODU takes up the 104th spot in the rankings when it comes to stopping the run, and that does not bode well for them at all.
Football is all about match-ups, not like it isn’t the big thing in all the sports that we cover around here I suppose, right? Well, the Panthers’ run game matches up nicely with the ODU run defense so I can see a 30-point+ afternoon happening for them. Yes, the ground game usually means the clock doesn’t stop much, but when you gain yards in chunks the clock won’t be our enemy.
The ODU offense isn’t having a ton of success this year running the ball, but Hayden Wolff is still having a pretty decent campaign with his arm for the Monarchs. Wolff has an impressive 12 – 2 TD to INT ratio, and he has a favourite target he uses often. Ali Jennings III needs 96 receiving yards to be a 1000-yard receiver, and we’re only 7 games into the campaign.
Jennings is averaging just under 20 yards per catch, and he has been spotted in the end zone 8 times, so expect a Big #0 to not be a zero in this game.

I just feel like 55.5 points aren’t enough because they will both reach the 30s. This is a 33 – 30 game waiting to happen, at least, so expect 60+ and a ticket to cash!
- Selection: Over 55.5
- Best odds: 1.95 (Pinnacle)

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs Baylor Bears Preview
October 30, 00:30 (UK time)
I’ll turn to the Big 12 Conference for this second tip of the day. Texas Tech and Baylor square off just after midnight for you across the Ocean, and this turned into another spot for a total to be the best bet from this affair.
Points? How many do you see? When the line setters slapped a 62.5 out there was it supposed to intimidate someone? Yeah, I puffed my chest right back at it and told it to go where the sun doesn’t shine, baby!
Each team has a 4 – 3 record coming into the game, and the over for both squads is 5 – 2 through 7 games. The Over is also 5 – 2 in the last 7 meetings between the teams here in Lubbock, and the last 3 meetings between them have come down to the wire. Last year’s meeting was the third straight time that a field goal separated the two teams when the final whistle blew, and there is plenty of reasons to expect a similar affair to take place on Saturday.
Of course, Baylor had a monster campaign a year ago winning 12 games in Coach Aranda’s second campaign in charge, but things have not come as easy to them this year as they did last season. Baylor had lost their previous 2 games going into the game with Kansas last weekend as both teams found themselves struggling to find wins.
Kansas jumped out that 5 – 0 start and boy, have they come back to Earth since losing 4 straight Big 12 Conference games. Baylor jumped out to a 28 – 3 lead and then they suddenly forgot they were still playing football. The Jayhawks responded to pull the game to a 28 – 23 score, and then Richard Reese put the game away with the final TD of the game to give the Bears the win, 35 – 23.
Reese is a machine, as he has toted the rock 116 times already, and he just needs one more scoot to the end zone to have double-digit scores. The Red Raiders are going to force Blake Shapen to beat them with his arm so they can focus on stopping Reese from having a big day. He only had 186 rushing yards last week, pfft.

Blake Shapen needs to put up a much better effort than he did against Kansas because Tech is going to make him beat them. It might be Joey McGuire’s first season with Tech, but if he wants to keep his program for a bowl invitation, this game has to be close. Sure, wins and losses are cut and dry, but I still see both offenses having plenty of success here.
