Cincinnati Bengals v Pittsburgh Steelers: Warren Wins, Canada Loses
United States, NFL, Sunday, November 26th, 18:00 (UK)
It’s a divisional matchup first up for us on Sunday, as the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-4) travel to Ohio to face the Joe Burrow-less Cincinnati Bengals (5-5), and they’ll be missing a man of their own for this one.
Do you know how bad you have to be for the Steelers to fire you during the season?
Well, Matt Canada found out this week, as he became the first in-season coordinator casualty on either side of the ball for Pittsburgh since 1941 when he was fired by head coach Mike Tomlin.
The Steelers had been fielding calls to fire him for several weeks and a 13-10 defeat at the Cleveland Browns was the straw that broke the camel’s back, hopefully ending Pittsburgh’s turgid offensive struggles.
While the visitors will be hoping to end their offensive struggles this week, they might just be returning for a Cincinnati side that lost star quarterback Joe Burrow in last Thursday’s defeat at the Baltimore Ravens.
The Bengals will be relying on Jake Browning in his first NFL start since he was picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Minnesota Vikings in 2019, with his only real league experience coming after he came in against Baltimore and averaged 4.9 yards per attempt.
He managed not to turn the ball over and was able to keep some drives alive with his legs (4 attempts, 40 yards) but that’s about where the positives end for Cincinnati.
Meanwhile, the positives are only just beginning in Pittsburgh and 99% of them are coming from running-back Jaylen Warren – who many are hoping sees an uptick in carries with Canada’s firing.
Getting less touches than Najee Harris despite averaging 6.2 yards per carry compared to Najee’s 3.9, the Oklahoma State graduate broke off a 74-yard rushing touchdown against the Browns to give the Steelers their only offensive score of the game.
It gave Warren his second consecutive game of over 100 yards, and his third of 88 or more, and now he gets a positive matchup against a Cincinnati Bengals defence that has allowed seven different running backs to pass 50 yards.
The five leading rushing games against the Bengals have come in games they’ve lost and, with Pittsburgh favoured slightly in this one, don’t be surprised if the Steelers rack up some crazy yards on the ground – because god knows they can’t trust Kenny Pickett.
Arizona Cardinals v LA Rams: Trust Tight-End Trey
United States, NFL, Sunday, November 26th, 21:05 (UK)
The suddenly feisty Arizona Cardinals (2-7) have looked revitalised with the return of Kyler Murray from a long-term injury and now welcome divisional rival the LA Rams (4-6) to Glendale, looking to improve to 3-3 at home.
Arizona will probably consider themselves unlucky to have fallen to a 7th defeat of the year at the hands of the Texans last weekend, driving inside Houston’s 30-yard line and coming away with nothing on two separate occasions in the 21-16 defeat.
The Rams, on the other hand, were probably quite lucky to snap their three-game losing streak with a win over Seattle – mostly thanks to Jason Myers’ missed field goal on what was basically the last play of the game.
LA fought hard to do the ‘double’ over the Seahawks, adding the 17-16 victory to their 30-13 demolition of the same opponent in Week One, and will be looking to keep their slim playoff hopes alive with another divisional win here.
The Cardinals won’t make it easy for them though, and they’ll look to exploit the Rams’ weak spot against tight ends to make it happen. LA has given up the 9th most receiving yards in the league to opposing TEs so far this year, averaging 56.8 per game and giving up 5 touchdowns on the year.
McBride enjoyed his breakout game this season in the first meeting of these sides back in Week 6, catching four of five targets for 62 yards. Since then, he’s averaged 64 yards per game on 8.2 targets and has proven himself a favourite target for the Cardinals’ passing game.
Be it, Joshua Dobbs or Kyler Murray, he’s clearly an offensive weapon that Arizona trusts to look after the ball and pick up yards after catch – at which he has excelled – and he should have a nice day against this soft Rams underbelly.
Philadelphia Eagles v Buffalo Bills: Super Swift Bullies Bills
United States, NFL, Sunday, November 26th, 21:25 (UK)
In what is potentially the game of the weekend, the Philadelphia Eagles (9-1) welcome the league’s biggest underperformers the Buffalo Bills (6-5) to Lincoln Financial Field as they look to move to 3-0 against potential AFC Championship contenders.
It’s the third game of an absolutely brutal six-game stretch for the Birds, with an NFC Championship rematch with the San Francisco 49ers and trips to both the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks on the schedule before Christmas.
They escaped Arrowhead by the skin of their teeth on Monday Night Football, thanking their lucky stars that Kansas City’s receivers had hands covered in butter while Nick Sirriani celebrated in the tunnel.
The Chiefs couldn’t convert on their two-minute drill, with Marquez Valdes-Scantling dropping a would-be touchdown and Justin Watson missing an absolute dolly on 4th & 25, which allowed Jalen Hurts to kneel out the game for a 21-17 victory.
Buffalo, meanwhile, took their frustrations for two consecutive losses out on the hapless New York Jets – pummeling their AFC East rival into oblivion last Sunday with a 32-6 victory that prompted Jets starting quarterback Zach Wilson to be dropped to QB3 on the depth chart.
Wilson was benched in the third quarter for new starter Tim Boyle who didn’t fare much better, going fumble-punt-interception in Gang Green’s final three drives to cap another miserable night for head coach Robert Saleh.
One player who did enjoy themselves for the Jets was Breece Hall, who caught five passes for 50 yards and a score while exploiting one of Buffalo’s clear points. The Bills give up the 3rd-most receiving yards per game to opposing running backs, and it’s an area they’ve struggled in all season.
Fourteen different backs have tallied 16 or more receiving yards against the Bills defence, a defence decimated by injuries, with four going for 50 or more. Swift, one of the league’s better pass-catchers out of the backfield, ranks 17th amongst all running backs for total yards this year – averaging 19.7 per game and has surpassed this line in five of his last seven.
After starting the season slowly (14 yards in three games), Swift’s usage has exploded since Week 4 – seeing him average 26.2 receiving yards on four receptions, per game.
LA Chargers v Baltimore Ravens: Gus Bus Keeps Rolling
United States, NFL, Monday, November 27th, 01:15 (UK)
Two of the NFL’s more interesting sides to watch are set to do battle on Sunday Night Football when the Los Angeles Chargers (4-6) welcome the seemingly unstoppable Baltimore Ravens (8-3) to SoFi Stadium in what looks set to be an offensive explosion.
The Ravens took care of business on Thursday Night Football last week, hammering the Cincinnati Bengals (sans Joe Burrow) 34-20 in a victory that has seen them take sole control of the AFC following the conclusion of Week 11’s fixtures.
The Chargers, on the other hand, did anything but take care of business on Sunday, despite Justin Herbert putting in one of the best individual performances of the season in Green Bay.
LA fell 23-20 at the hands of the Packers and, like the Chiefs, suffered from a myriad of dropped passes – including Keenan Allen inexplicably missing a touchdown pass that hit him in the chest, and Quentin Johnston doing whatever he can to force his mum back into work by dropping a dime on 3rd & 6 that would have put the Chargers in field goal range inside the two-minute warning.
As the fallout from that game has continued into the week – including Brandon Staley getting quite heated in his post-game press conference and star pass-rusher Joey Bosa going on IR – the Chargers must get themselves focused for what is arguably their toughest test of the season fo far… stopping the Baltimore Ravens.
Outside of the AFC North, Baltimore have been phenomenal – boasting a 5-1 record that includes dismantlings of the Detroit Lions (8-2), Seattle Seahawks, and Houston Texans (both 6-4) – they now look to add another scalp to their list.
While there has been renewed focus from offensive coordinator Todd Monken on the Ravens’ passing game, it hasn’t stopped Gus Edwards from getting his and he’s been feasting like never before this year.
In what seems to be an effort to protect Lamar Jackson – who has scored one rushing TD since Week 4 – Edwards is getting the bulk of the carries in goal-to-go situations, and it’s paying dividends for both him and Baltimore.
The ‘Gus Bus’ has 10 rushing touchdowns on the year, with nine of those coming in his last five games and none coming from more than seven yards out.
