KANSAS STATE WILDCATS VS TROY TROJANS: Trojans Keep it Close
The Kansas State Wildcats will play host to the Troy Trojans at high noon ET (5 p.m. UK Time), and the line setters have left us plenty of room to think underdog while expecting plenty of points as well. In all honesty, I still see Pinnacle offering a +17 handicap on Troy, and that has me blown away too.
The Trojans are carrying a 12-game winning streak into this contest, a run that started last year as Troy reeled off 11 consecutive wins to close out the 2022 campaign. Troy opened this year’s campaign with a 48 – 30 win over Stephen F. Austin, and although that impresses no one because SFU is not even an FBS program, it still helps build on the momentum that Troy carries into this weekend’s affair against a damn tough K State squad.
Troy Head Coach Jon Sumrall only won 12 games, the SBC Conference Championship Game, and the Cure Bowl against UTSA last season. That’s all, nothing much for a first-year coach who took over a 5 – 7 Troy team that needed a massive change headed into 2022.
Sumrall begins year 2 of his tenure with the Trojans expected to navigate their way to another Sun Belt West Division title, especially after South Alabama choked heavily last weekend. The Jaguars and Trojans are the favourites to win the SBC West title, and it looks to me as if Troy has their eyes on the prize already.
Granted, this is not a conference game for Troy or Kansas State, but non-conference games like these still garner plenty of attention from fans and bettors alike. This is going to be one of the best games of the weekend, as Gunnar Watson and Will Howard are both going to have big days tossing the rock around the yard.
Kansas State didn’t just return their entire offensive line from last season, but they have their top offensive linemen playing again this year. That is an incredible number of players with experience and time together.
Howard had two receivers top the century mark in the 45 – 0 trashing of SEMO to open their season last weekend. Again, SEMO is not an FBS program, and I still don’t get why or how teams from the FCS land in FBS stadiums. I do get the money aspect of how and why the NCAA lets such matchups happen, but I am so opposed to that noise. SEMO should not be playing Big 12 programs… PERIOD!
Anyway, now that Troy and Kansas State have their cupcake opening games out of the way, this will be a much different approach for both teams on Saturday.
Troy has a chip on their shoulders and who doesn’t love a good Sun Belt – Big 12 upset? The Sun Belt conference has been providing big upsets since Appalachian State beat Michigan years ago, and this conference still finds ways to come up with big games when they are big dogs!
Give me those points and splash that total in a same-game parlay when Kansas State and Troy meet on Saturday in Manhattan!
- Selection: Troy +16.5
- Best Odds: 1.90
- Bookmaker: Bet365
- Stakes: 4/10
- Bonus Bet: Over 51.5 Points, stakes: 3/10 and 1.90 odds at bet365
MISSISSIPPI REBELS VS TULANE GREEN WAVE: Touchdown City
This total has been climbing since the lines were first issued, and I hope it doesn’t get even higher before Saturday. I saw 63 on Sunday, and now we are up near 66 with 3 points of a jump over the past few days.
I think I get why this is happening, and it’s because the public expects plenty of points to be scored in this game. I am not one to ride any kind of public bandwagon because usually Joe Bettor is clueless, but in this case, I think I am on the side of expecting points too.
Ole Miss pounded out 73 points last weekend against Mercer, and once again we have a clash that should never happen. Mercer is also an FCS football program that has no right trying to compete with any team in the FBS, much less an SEC squad!
Now, let’s not give the Rebels too much credit for that win because I could pick out about 40 teams in NCAA football that could easily score 70+ vs Mercer.
Ole Miss lost 6 of their final 7 games last season, and they are certainly no powerhouse program in a power-5 conference that is the SEC.
I am more interested in this Tulane team that just beat down those South Alabama Jaguars I mentioned above in the first preview. I admit that I thought the Jags could beat Tulane which you saw right here last week but that didn’t happen.
Now, after seeing that game and knowing what Tulane can do, I have faith that they can not only hang with Ole Miss but possibly provide an upset special!
Michael Pratt put up quite a performance against the Jags to open the campaign last week, as only one of his passes was dropped en route to a 4 TD passing day. Pratt went 14 for 15 with 294 passing yards, and he made it look easy.
Let’s not lose track of how the season ended for Tulane in 2022. All they did was win 8 of their last 9 games of 2022, which included an incredible bowl win over USC, 46 – 45 with Heisman winner Caleb Williams on the other side of the field.
I think that both of these programs are going to go well over 30 points apiece, and the team with the ball last will end up deciding who wins or loses this game. I predict a 38 – 35 result with 70+ points crashing into the scoreboard, so expect a tight game with plenty of fireworks on Saturday in the Bayou!
- Selection: Tulane +7.5
- Best Odds: 1.90
- Bookmaker: Bet365
- Stakes: 4/10
- Bonus Bet: Over 66.5 Points at 3/10 and 1.90 odds at Bet65.
