NCAA Football Week 1 Best Bets: Saturday, September 3rd

We have already officially kicked off the 2022 campaign last weekend, but this week marks the proper week 1 schedule that our resident U.S sports expert Ej Garr will be covering here at BettingExpert.

You are 1 – 0 after following Ej’s North Texas bet to open the season, and today you will get two breakdowns and 2 wagers to take advantage of this weekend. In classic Ej fashion, you’ll be getting a pair of totals from the Saturday gridiron so let’s take it to the field and kick this campaign into gear!

In this article:

Ohio Bobcats vs Florida Atlantic Owls Preview

September 3, 23:00 (UK time)

The FAU Owls have jumped to a 1 – 0 start to the campaign after earning an opening weekend win over Charlotte last weekend, 43 – 13. Now, Willie Taggart takes his bunch on the road up north to Athens, Ohio, where the Bobcats will be waiting as underdogs by 4 points for this non-conference tilt.

This is the first meeting between these two programs that each fell short of a bowl game appearance a year ago wanting desperately to make it back to the post-season. After a 5 – 3 start to last year’s campaign, the Owls fell apart under Taggart and lost their final 4 games ending their season with more questions than answers.

Landing N’Kosi Perry from the Miami Hurricanes last season now gives him a full year of experience with OC Brent Dearmon, so the two should have a good working relationship entering his senior season.

Perry was an efficient 16 of 22 with 256 passing yards, and he had one TD strike to JeQuan Burton who only snatched a pair of balls in the game. N’Kosi Perry hit 8 different targets in the win, and he found his way to paydirt with his legs to complete a nice drive to open the scoring in the second quarter that started to open up the game.

After scoring the first 7 points of the game, Charlotte watched the Owls score the next 33 points before finally responding late in the 3rd quarter.

Ohio and Tim Albin are beginning his second year of the project in Athens, and after a 3 – 9 campaign a season ago there is much concern coming into 2022. Can I say I find it hysterical that there are so many outlets and magazine authors calling for a big upgrade in the Bobcats’ defense this season?

Excuse me? Wait, so you are bringing back 9 starters from a team that got scorched more times than a S’More last year and you see an improvement coming? Yeah, stop believing a word of that noise because it’s simply not going to happen. Ohio is going to be a middle-of-the-pack MAC program that might win 4 or 5 games all season.

Expect plenty of scoring from FAU to come, and it will push this total right over the number you’re looking at below.

  • Selection: Over 49.5 Points
  • Best odds: 1.91 (BWin)
  • Stakes: 4/10

Odds as of 10:00 am August 31, 2022. Odds may now differ.

Nevada Wolf Pack vs Texas State Bobcats Preview

September 3, 21:30 (UK time)

First of all, this total opened at 56 and for some reason, the public has pounded the under so much that it has fallen to 51.5. Can I send those people an early Christmas card and thank them for making our lives a little easier? Hey, if you bet this under? You’re the one I am thanking so pay attention to how you’re going to lose your money today!

Nevada is going to get steamrolled by Texas State.

Listen to me, Texas State is going to score 45 points on Nevada today. Jake Spavital finally has a quarterback he can trust to fling the ball around the yard in Layne Hatcher Jr.

Hatcher will be in a glorious position to put himself over the 10,000 passing yard mark with a big campaign, as he put up nearly 7,500 yards and 65 TD passes at Arkansas State. Welcome to San Marcos, Texas, baby!

It’s not very often you can expect a 4 – 8 team to go on the road and open with a win, but Nevada has a lot of work to do under 1st-year head coach Ken Wilson. Wilson showed up to town with an empty cupboard, as only 2 returning offensive starters and 4 players on the other side of the ball are coming back from the 8 – 5 team that’s been to 4 straight bowl games.

Oklahoma State transfer Shane Illingworth had a pedestrian outing against New Mexico State to open the campaign last weekend. Sure, it was a win, but 23 – 12? New Mexico State is going to see its fair share of thumpings and Nevada got lucky to jump out to an early 17 – 0 lead while sitting back for the rest of the game.

Illingworth split time with Nate Cox in the game, and the two of them combined to put up a whole 78 passing yards. They both only completed a total of 7 passes and neither of them came close to throwing a TD pass. Toa Taua only managed to find 109 rushing yards and backup running back Devonte Lee scored the only TD of the game.

I consider that win a glorified practice session so you can tell how much stock I have there. Like uh, none! Notice the line setters aren’t even remotely sure who is winning this game with a pick ‘em posted. Do yourself a favour. Texas State Moneyline and the Over 51.5 is where the money is coming from, so play it accordingly.

  • Selection: Over 51.5 Points
  • Best odds: 1.91 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 4/10
  • Bonus Tip: Bobcats Moneyline

Odds as of 10:00 am August 31, 2022. Odds may now differ.
