The Jacksonville Gamecocks will be competing at the FBS level for the first time in program history, as they make the jump to Conference USA in 2023. The UTEP Miners will have to open Conference USA play on the road against the newcomers to the league on Saturday, and the line setters can’t seem to decide which program deserves to be favoured.

With a pick ‘em offer being posted by Bet365, I find it hard to think that we will be having a first-year program win their first game at the FBS level, even if they do have home-field advantage.

Let’s keep in mind that Burgess-Snow Field isn’t exactly an intimidating place, as the venue can only max out at about 24,000 fans. That is a far cry from some of the attendance numbers we see in the Big Ten, SEC, etc., but it’s home for the Gamecocks, regardless.

While climbing their way to the FBS level, the FGamecocks have, at least, won their last 11 opening games at home. None of that happened against any of these current teams they’ll be facing in Conference USA action.

While Rich Rodriguez is in season number two with the Gamecocks, he does bring 17 years of FBS coaching experience with him. From 2001- 2017, Rodriguez was manning the sidelines for either West Virginia, Michigan, or Arizona, and now he has a chance to be the first coach from Jacksonville, Alabama to appear in a bowl game!

Zion Webb was granted a seventh season of eligibility, and Rodriguez just named him the opening-day QB only two days ago.

That will take a big surprise or two along the campaign, and I believe that UTEP will be escaping with a win to start to season on Saturday. I also expect this to be an old-fashioned shootout with plenty of points being scored.

Jax State has 9 players returning on offence, and their defence is going to be shocked when they get hit with the UTEP offence.

UTEP has one of the most experienced offensive lines in Conference USA, and that is going to bode well for them to start the season against the Gamecocks.
