Cincinnati Bengals vs Los Angeles Rams Same-Game Parlay: Puka And Pals Plague Paycor
Los Angeles Rams +9.5 Alternate Handicap
The Los Angeles Rams have been one of the NFL’s biggest surprises through two weeks of action, with Matthew Stafford orchestrating their rag-tag group of misfits into one of the league’s elite offenses.
Back healthy and under centre after an injury plagued 2022 season, Stafford has been dominating defenses through the air, throwing for 300+ yards in consecutive games and guiding the Rams to the 2nd overall offense (per DVOA) despite the absence of WR Cooper Kupp.
They sprung the upset of Week 1 when they spanked divisional rivals the Seattle Seahawks 30-13 at ‘the Clink’ before falling back down to earth somewhat in a 30-23 home loss to another divisional rival in the San Francisco 49ers.
In pre-season they weren’t expected to be competitive with either of these teams, never mind going toe-to-toe to both in what was meant to be a rebuild year for Sean McVay’s side, and that has bred a confidence in LA that they likely haven’t seen since their Super Bowl win over this same opponent.
Meanwhile, Cincinnati have been absolutely woeful. The Bengals have lost back-to-back divisional games to open the season, and look likely to have serious problems at QB.
It was only a few weeks ago that the organisation made Joe Burrow the highest paid player in NFL history but he has started the season in dreadful fashion, presumably playing on a still somewhat injured calf that he aggravated last weekend against Baltimore.
The number 1 overall pick in the 2020 draft is presumed questionable for this one, having not practiced on Thursday, and even if he does suit-up he’s likely to be limited – which is not what you want with Aaron Donald running directly at you. He leads a LA defense that ranks 6th overall despite giving up 30 points to the Niners (#7 offense), whilst the Bengals are the league’s bottom-ranked side for offensive DVOA.
With Stafford dealing and Burrow reeling, 9.5 points is more than enough for the Rams to hang-tight with Cincinnati.
Puka Nacua 75+ Receiving Yards
With Cooper Kupp out indefinitely to start the season, there were serious worries about how the Rams would cope and whether they’d ever be able to get anything going on offense with Van Jefferson the only real recognised name at receiver – step forward Puka Nacua.
The fifth-round rookie has been a revelation for LA already, and Matthew Stafford is already confident enough in him to force-feed him the ball. Only Justin Jefferson (309) has more receiving yards than the BYU graduate’s 266, and no player has seen more targets (35) or hauled in more receptions (25) than Nacua.
The tape shows that he is also running routes extremely well and picking out holes in opposing defenses already whilst his connection with Matthew Stafford is already next level – with The Athletic reporting today that he joined the QB’s ‘Breakfast Club’ early-morning film meetings alongside Cooper Kupp.
Kyren Williams Anytime Touchdown Scorer
While Stafford has been airing it out to move the Rams up-and-down the field, it’s been Kyren Williams that’s making the difference in the redzone. The second-year receiver has four of LA’s five touchdowns on the season, with the fifth coming from the RB whose job Wiliams took.
Now the clear RB1 following the trade of Cam Akers to the Vikings, Williams should see significant usage against a Bengals defense that ranks 31st against the rush, with only Pittsburgh allowing more rushing yards than Cincinnati.
Williams has a pair of scores in each of his games this year and is one of only two players with double digit redzone carries, and he’ll get opportunities in this game too. The Rams see him as a ‘three-down’ back and that was clear by the fact he was on the field for 95% of offensive snaps against San Francisco.
