Leipzig vs Tottenham Prediction
Tottenham Hotspur face an uphill battle in qualifying for the next round of the Champions League. After defeat at home to RB Leipzig, the Premier League side now travel to the Red Bull Arena hoping to turn around a 1-0 deficit. Can Jose Mourinho’s side manage to overcome their German opponents? Let’s see what the stats say.
Recent Form
Since the first leg, Spurs have been on a shocking run. Defeats in the Premier League to Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers followed, with a penalty shootout loss to Norwich City in the FA Cup ending their hopes of winning a domestic trophy this season.
Burnley away is coming up for Tottenham, but their form is hardly the best preparation for an important Champions League game. A win at Turf Moor would, of course, increase confidence that this Spurs side can get a result in Germany.
RB Leipzig have performed exceptionally well in the Bundesliga this season. Since their 1-0 win in the first leg, Leipzig have enjoyed a 5-0 thrashing of Schalke, which was followed by a draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen.
Leipzig v Tottenham Recent Meetings
Let’s analyse that first leg meeting in greater detail. A Timo Werner penalty was enough that evening for Leipzig to take a lead into the return fixture, but in truth the scoreline could, and possibly should, have been worse for Spurs.
Leipzig missed a number of chances, particularly in the first half. Those missed chances give last season’s CL finalists Spurs hope that they can turn this tie around, but it’s a huge ask, particularly against a side who have only lost once on home soil in their domestic league so far this season.
Leipzig v Tottenham Stats & Analysis
Tottenham’s quest to progress to the next round is even more difficult considering the long term injuries to Harry Kane and Heung-min Son. Hugo Lloris may be fit for this one, though, with Ryan Sessegnon and Juan Foyth pushing to return.
For Leipzig, Willi Orban is still out, though it’s possible we could see the return of fellow centre half Ibrahima Konate.
Leipzig have been in great form all season, and their home record is excellent. Only losing once on home soil in the Bundesliga, Leipzig have scored 32 goals in their 12 home games, conceding just 13.
Spurs’ away record doesn’t make for good reading. In their domestic league, Tottenham have won just three times on the road this season. Losing six of their 14 away games too, Spurs have only scored 19 goals in those 14 games, conceding 24.
Leipzig v Tottenham Bets
Leipzig are huge favourites to win the match outright. They are priced at around 1.60 to win the game, with Spurs out at 5.0. The draw is at 4.20. To qualify, Leipzig are at 1.14, with Spurs at 5.50.
Spurs, of course, need to score to stand any chance of qualifying. It’s hard, though, to envisage Leipzig failing to score. Both teams to score is at 1.75. To increase the odds slightly, consider a Total Goals/Both Teams To Score bet, over 2.5 goals and both teams to find the back of the net is priced at 2.10.
