The upcoming 2023/24 will be the record 90th iteration of the Primeira Liga. The action kicks off on 11 August 2023 and leads all the way to 19 May 2024, when the new champion of Portugal will be crowned. The newest season will feature no changes when it comes to the number of teams. 18 clubs will still be featuring in the Primeira Liga, with the last two directly being relegated to Liga Portugal 2, while the 16th club will have another chance to stay up through a payoff decider.
Due to the league dropping down to seventh place in Europe, only the champion will get a direct spot for the Champions League next season. The second-seeded team in the league will have to play in the Champions League qualification stage. The third and fourth teams will compete in the qualification stages for the Europa League and the Conference League, respectively.
With 18 teams competing in a round-robin system where they play two games against their opponents, one at home and one away, this means 34 games for each team, accounting for a total of 306 matches for the season.
Primeira Liga Season Start and End Date
The upcoming 2023/24 Primeira Liga season is set to start on 11 August 2023. It will go all the way to 19 May 2024, when the last matches will be played and a new champion will be crowned.
At the same time, Taca da Liga will commence on 21 July 2023 and will conclude with the final game on 27 January 2024. The Portuguese Cup competition includes a total of 34, which are teams from the Primeira Liga and LigaPro competing against each other in a one-game contest.

24.9% of goals, 190 of them, were scored between the 76th and the 90th minute of the match. Meaning that things got more interesting as the game came to a close. The second most efficient period was just before the close of the first half, between the 31st and the 45 minutes of the game, where 150 goals were scored, accounting for 19.7% of total goals.
The second half saw more action, with 55.8% of goals scored, totalling to 426. On the other hand, strikers managed 337 goals in the first period of the game, for a total of 44.2% of goals.

When it comes to home fixtures, teams playing at home managed 49% of wins in the previous season, compared to only 33% of away teams winning. At the same time, only 18% of the matches finished without a winner, which is unusually low.
66% of the matches finished with Over 1.5 Goals scored. On the other hand, 48% of matches had Over 2.5 Goals scored, while 25% of games went Over 3.5 goals.
Home teams scored 1.42 goals a match while visiting teams only managed 1.08 goals a game. In 43% of matches, both teams were able to score, while only 6% of matches ended without any goals scored.
According to the statistics, 1-0 for the home team was the most popular score. It happened on 16% of occasions. On the other hand, the second most frequent score was 0-1 for the visiting team, which occurred 11% of the time.
Primeira Liga Player Stats
The Bola de Prata, translated to “Silver Ball” in Portuguese, is an award given annually to the top scorer of the Portuguese league. The award was introduced in 1934 when Sporting CP’s Manuel Soeiro became the first winner.
Last season, Mehdi Taremi from Porto managed to score the most goals, as he bagged in 22 in 38 matches, winning his second-best scorer trophy in the last five years.

Primeira Liga Past Winners
Portuguese football is dominated by their very own Big Three – Sporting CP, Benfica, and Porto. Only two other clubs have managed to win the Portuguese league title other than those three. Both Boavista and Belenenses have a single title to their name.

Benfica won their latest title during the 2022/23 season with only a two-point margin opposed the second-placed Porto. The Eagles secured their title in the very last game of Matchday 34 by defeating Santa Clara by 3:0 at home. Both Porto and Benfica will be playing in the Champions League group stage next season.
Finishing third in the league, Sporting Braga will play in the qualifications for the Champions League. Sporting CP had a disappointing season, and as the fourth team in the league, will appear in the Europa League group stage next season.
Finally, Arouca and Vitória de Guimaraes both earned spots in the Conference League qualification stage. Meanwhile, Santa Clara and Pacos de Ferreira were directly demoted to Liga Portugal 2.
