Gremio aren’t out of the woods just yet, who are three points above the relegation zone after just one win in their last five. However, their home form offers promise. Sao Paulo don’t usually travel well, but continue to improve as they look to avoid the Copa Libertadores qualifiers next February.

Gremio vs Sao Paulo Prediction 1: Goals anticipated

Gremio rescued a valuable point thanks to an extremely fortunate own goal in their 2-2 draw with Juventude last week as they continue to try and secure their place in the league for next season.

At home, it’s been rather entertaining in recent weeks, with their last five home matches producing at least three goals and seeing both teams score at the time of writing.

Surprisingly, the one match they did lose was against relegation-threatened Criciuma, yet managed to beat both Flamengo and Fortaleza. There’s been a lack of consistency from a defensive point of view, but going forward they’ve been incredibly strong.

Sao Paulo have been one of the worst teams on the road over the last couple of years, yet they’ve seemed to pull it together in recent weeks with a chance of a Copa Libertadores spot – instead of the dreaded qualifiers.

They’ve scored in their last three away matches, as well as comfortably beating Bahia 3-0 in their own back yard. They’ve also only lost two of their last ten (W4 D4 L2) – one against Internacional as well as a surprise loss to Cuiaba. But all in all, they are putting a good run together at the right time.

Both chasing valuable points, this should open the game up and with Arena do Gremio seeing plenty of goals at present, that looks set to continue this weekend.

Gremio vs Sao Paulo Prediction 2: Key attackers to lead the charge

With both teams expected to take the game to one another, it’s best to focus on each team’s key players in the final third.

Martin Braithwaite was a huge statement signing for Gremio, and the Danish forward has adapted well to his new environment. Having scored seven goals in his 14 league matches, he’s been on target in two of his last three matches, scoring the opener at home against Juventude last week.

Despite being 33, the veteran striker is a real handful in Brazil, and alongside Diego Costa, Sao Paulo’s defence will feel the effects of the game the following morning. Costa is a real handful, and the former Chelsea forward can help create room for Gremio’s main forward. The Dane had four shots against Juventude, including two on target, and he will be their main threat once again.

Sao Paulo’s not-so-secret weapon, Lucas Moura, has also had a fantastic season. From his free-roaming midfield role, the former Spurs player has scored 10 goals in 26 matches and is the reason why they are so high up the table.

He also scored in Sao Paulo’s last two away games against Bragantino and Bahia, as well as scoring a brace against Vasco last month. Dropping deep to pick up the ball, Moura is comfortable progressing forward with the ball and shooting from range – a huge plus against a defence that tends to stand off at present.

Both players might not get on the scoresheet, but as I’m expecting a wide open match and plenty of goals, you can back both players to hit the target once just shy of evens.
