Lyon v Bayern Munich Prediction

It’s the second of two UEFA Champions League semi-finals as Lyon prepare to take on Bayern Munich. Both of these sides secured rather impressive results in the quarters. The French side deserve credit for their underdog victory over Manchester City while Bayern produced an unbelievable win against FC Barcelona. This promises to be an exciting match with a place in the final awaiting the winner.

Lyon v Bayern Munich Recent Form

Lyon didn’t end their Ligue 1 campaign in the best form and their friendly warm-up results weren’t much better. However, the French side followed up progression over Juventus with the 2-1 victory over Man City. Bayern are on an incredible run of form with 19 straight victories to their name. The most recent of which was that 8-2 demolition of FC Barcelona.

Lyon v Bayern Munich Recent Matchups

These two clubs have met numerous times down the years but not for over a decade. Incidentally, the last time these two met was at the same stage of this competition, in the semi-finals of the 2009-10 Champions League. Bayern won 4-0 on aggregate to secure a place in the final they ultimately lost to Inter Milan. They’ve met eight times in total. Bayern have three wins and Lyon have won two with the others ending all square.

Lyon v Bayern Munich Stats & Analysis

There’s a lot to suggest that we can expect more than a few goals in this match. Lyon have shown their quality to get this far in the competition but what they haven’t done is kept things tight defensively. The Ligue 1 side have kept just two clean sheets in the Champions League this campaign. That’s less than AFC Ajax and they were knocked out in the group stage last year. Both teams have scored in 67% of their matches, something that will give Bayern Munich optimism.

Not that the German champions need much more reason for optimism. 19 straight victories will instil more than a little confidence but their Champions League record suggests that this will be one for the neutrals. No side has a higher average number of total goals per match than Bayern this season at 5.22 per match. A total of 54% of their matches have finished with 4.5+ goals compared to the competition average of 20.7%.

But what separates this Bayern side from other high-scoring teams is their defensive ability. Only Paris Saint-Germain have kept more clean sheets than the German champions but Bayern don’t have a reliance on their backline. It’s not as if they’re winning matches by a single goal to nil most weeks. In fact, Bayern have won more Champions League matches by 5+ goals this season than they have by a single-goal margin.

Lyon v Bayern Munich Bets

It’s all part of the reason why Bayern Munich are the favourites not just for this match, but for the whole competition. They’re the massive 1/4 favourites to secure the win and their place in a UEFA Champions League final for the first time since they won the competition back in 2013. Lyon, meanwhile are way out at 49/4 to win the match and get to the final of the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history. A draw in 90 minutes is 13/2.

Bayern are the big favourites here so it will be tempting to extend those match outcome odds with a European handicap. The German side are 8/15 to secure the win with a European handicap of 1-0 to Lyon. Those odds go up to 6/4 for 2-0 and 7/2 for 3-0. Failing that, Bayern are 5/4 to win to nil.

As previously mentioned, we can expect goals here. Bayern’s total match goal average of 5.22 is an extraordinarily high figure but Lyon’s is reasonably high at 2.78. over 3.5 total match goals is a tempting 20/21 but the way Bayern have been playing lately, it is tempting to venture even higher. Over 5.5 total goals is 5/1 and over 6.5 is out at 91/10.

In terms of goalscorers, there are just so many options in that Bayern team. Six different players scored against FC Barcelona and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if at least a few of them grabbed a goal in this one. Thomas Muller is a tempting 6/4 to score at any time. The German forward is a big-game player so that seems like a good investment. Alphonso Davies put in another impressive display last week and is 9/3 while Corentin Tolisso is 10/3 to get one at any time against his old team.
