RB Leipzig v Atletico Madrid Prediction

RB Leipzig take on Atletico Madrid in Portugal in the second quarter-final in this new-look UEFA Champions League finale. The German side will be without star forward Timo Werner after his departure to Chelsea but will be aiming to impress on their first quarter-final appearance. For Diego Simeone and Atletico, this is familiar ground and they want to go all the way after knocking out the holders Liverpool in the previous round.

RB Leipzig v Atletico Madrid Recent Form

RB Leipzig just couldn’t find the consistency in the final stages of their Bundesliga season. The last few months of the campaign were characterised by stop-start results and a lot of disappointing draws. Atletico, meanwhile, ended their La Liga campaign on a high. They haven’t lost since the first of February and beat the holders Liverpool in their most recent European match.

RB Leipzig v Atletico Madrid Recent Matchups

It’s the first time that these two sides have met which isn’t exactly surprising considering it is just the second time that RB Leipzig have featured in a European competition. It’s actually the first time that Leipzig have played against a team from Spain while Atletico have already faced off against another Bundesliga club this season in Bayer Leverkusen.

RB Leipzig v Atletico Madrid Stats & Analysis

Just don’t expect too many goals from this match. Of the sides left in the competition, RB Leipzig have one of the lower average amount of total match goals. Their tally of 2.75 will hardly get the neutrals off their seats but Atletico are even further down the list at 2.38 per match. Barcelona are the only side left in the competition with a lower average number of goals per match.

There is an interesting contrast with these two teams in terms of the number of goals in their matches. Atletico Madrid seem to approach their Champions League matches in very much the same way as their La Liga games in terms of openness. They have an average of 2.05 goals per game in their La Liga matches for the campaign, the second-lowest in the league. But the same cannot be said of Leipzig who play a far more open and expansive style of football in the Bundesliga. The result is a total match goal average of 3.47, the fifth-highest in the league.

Atletico Madrid have really spread the goals out amongst their players this season, especially in the Champions League. Unlike previous seasons when the likes of Antoine Griezmann or Diego Costa got the majority of their goals, this side has goals from everywhere. Already Atletico have had eight different scorers of their 12 goals in the Champions League this campaign. In comparison, 12 of Leipzig’s 14 goals have been scored by just three players and one of them won’t be playing in this match.

RB Leipzig v Atletico Madrid Bets

Timo Werner’s absence will undoubtedly affect RB Leipzig’s chances in this match. The bookies have Atletico Madrid as the favourites for the match at 7/5 to secure the win and their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the fourth time in seven seasons. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig are out at 12/5 to secure the win and their first match in the Champions League semis. A draw in 90 minutes is out at 9/4.

But it’s easy to see why Atletico Madrid are the big favourites here. They’ve got to this stage numerous times in the last few years and will be aiming to go just a few steps further this time. Even their record against German opposition is fearsome with 15 wins and three draws from 21 matches. The absence of Werner will make a big difference to Leipzig’s chances here. Atletico to win to nil is 11/4 if you want to lengthen those match outcome odds.

As previously mentioned, we shouldn’t expect too many goals here. That’s usually the case when Atletico Madrid are playing so it may be worth backing a low-scoring game. Under 3.5 total match goals is unsurprisingly low at 1/4 so punters are better off looking at lower figures. Under 2.5 is 8/11 while under 1.5 is a tempting 85/40.
In terms of goalscorers, there are plenty of options for both teams. The standout names for Atletico Madrid are the likes of Joao Felix, Alvaro Morata, and Diego Costa who are 3/1, 2/1, and 13/5 respectively to score at any time. At the other end, the creative Emil Forsberg is a decent punt to score at any time at 9/3.
