Alexander Zverev vs Holger Rune Prediction: Night Match Worth Tuning in For
I’m not going to have a bet on this match, although I was close to backing Rune. I think each of these guys has their own issues entering this one. For the younger of the two, it’s been a rough year on return. I’m not sure whether a spike in unforced errors has simply led to easier holds for his opponent or if he’s changed something up on return, but only three players have broken less among the world’s top 50 players in 2024 than Rune.
That’s a pretty big concern against someone like Zverev, who has a huge serve and is in decent form, even though he was on the precipice of losing, down a double break in the fifth set last round.
As for Zverev, he just hasn’t been convincing enough this past week. Whether it’s his forehand continuing to be far too inconsistent or patchy play overall, I’ve not been overly impressed by a few of his victories.
In terms of matchup, one thing I can say is that these two are generally both very strong on the backhand wing, can play attacking tennis when on serve, and are both excellent athletes. Nothing is for certain when looking ahead and I don’t like to deal in absolutes, but this should be a great match to watch the vast majority of the time. Our Zverev vs Rune suggestion is to pass on betting on the match and enjoy the night session between two excellent players.
Alexander Zverev Recent Form
Despite his scare last round against Tallon Griekspoor, Zverev is on a nine-match win streak entering this tilt and he’s won 11 of his last 12 matches dating back to the Madrid Masters.
There have been some shaky moments along the way, but with his serve, backhand, and ability to defend, Zverev is tough to beat anytime, let alone when there are so many injuries or physical concerns at the top of the game as there are now.
We’ll see if he can keep the momentum going against a strong player, but one who isn’t having the best of times on tour this season.
Holger Rune Recent Form
I mentioned Zverev barely surviving his match with Griekspoor last round, but Rune had a scare himself back in the second round against Flavio Cobolli.
He nearly blew a two-set lead before squeezing through in a third-set tiebreak, then in the last round was broken serving for the match and played two tight sets with Jozef Kovalik. Relative to expectations and his talent level, it has by no means been a good year for the 21-year-old, including this week of fairly uninspiring wins.
The game would be better off if he found his best level and challenged all the top guns on tour, but he’s not close to that level right now.
Alexander Zverev vs Holger Rune H2H – Stat of the Match
Rune won the lone meeting between these two in Munich back in 2022 on clay. He won it rather easily too. Now, obviously, the form of each of these guys is much different at the moment and Munich always seems to be a tough venue for Zverev.
