It’s been a great year for Zverev, who has solidified himself at the top of the ATP rankings. At the moment, he’s one of just three players (Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz being the other two) that has locked up his place at the year-end finals.
With all that said, I still think Griekspoor will be back in some form in this contest.
He’s a pretty tough player to break – even for strong returners, of which Zverev is one – with his strong serve and forehand combination. The court is playing quickly when the roof is on, which should help him keep things closer as well.
Finally, Zverev made it known he was sick leading into the tournament and though he breezed through the opening match he played, he made mention in the on-court interview afterward that he still wasn’t feeling 100%.
Griekspoor is a much tougher matchup for him than the underpowered Mattia Bellucci was, and I do think he should be able to push Zverev over the total games number here.

Alexander Zverev Recent Form
Zverev blitzed through his first matchup in Shanghai, but as I said, there may still be a concern (according to him) about energy levels.
He also played a lefty that has had a terrible time when stepping up to the better players on tour. Bellucci is underpowered and his variety and added aggression have helped propel him to new heights in terms of his ranking, but he’s in real tough when at as big of a power disadvantage as he was against Zverev or Jack Draper in Tokyo.
Before Shanghai, we hadn’t seen Zverev on the pro circuit since the U.S. Open, where he lost a competitive match in the quarterfinals to Taylor Fritz.
The game is really strong, with the big German possessing a monster first serve that he lands at an alarming rate, some great defensive abilities, and one of the best backhands in the sport.
He does struggle sometimes with pace to his forehand (which Griekspoor has the requisite weapons to exploit) and double faults have been an issue at times. Those are the main reasons he has yet to win at the highest levels of the sport – the best-of-five sets grand slams.
Tallon Griekspoor Recent Form
In the least surprising twist to reach the third round, Griekspoor blitzed through his match against the competent quick-court player in Jordan Thompson in the second round, while needing three sets to take down clay specialist Facundo Diaz Acosta.
It’s the nature of his game. He’s a volatile player who often struggles with decision-making and on return, but his firepower is such that lopsided wins against competent opponents are not exactly the most surprising results.
The one concern is how he’s fared against some of the best in the game. He was crushed in Beijing by Carlos Alcaraz and the tournament before that, Grigor Dimitrov also defeated him with ease.
Though he’s managed to be decent in his matches against Zverev, his last few losses are something of a concern entering this night session tilt.
Alexander Zverev vs Tallon Griekspoor H2H – Stat of the Match
Zverev leads the head-to-head between these two 4-1, but Griekspoor has played him tough several times. He beat him in Rotterdam last year, lost by a single break in Toronto last summer, lost again by a single break this season in Indian Wells, and then choked away what would’ve been a huge upset at the French Open (he led by a double break in the fifth set).
Now, some may say that will haunt him and hurt him in this one, but I prefer to look at what we know and not make assumptions. We know Griekspoor has competed well in this matchup in recent times and we know he possesses the ability to exploit one of Zverev’s few weaknesses.
