I’ve been staying away from backing Marterer as much as I normally would in recent months, but I think this presents an opportunity to do so. By no means would I be going large on this wager, but in a best-of-five set match against someone like Bergs, I’m happy to take a chance with some decent odds.

Though his form hasn’t been great this year by any means, the German played one of his better matches in the opening round and that is an encouraging sign. Granted, it’s just one match and was against a quicker court specialist, so we can’t overreact, I was happy to see him play with fewer erratic patches.

I’m also hesitant to trust Bergs at such expensive valuations. Though he’s extremely talented, he’s struggled a lot physically and I think those breakdowns are a big part of why he’s never made it past this stage of a grand slam tournament before.

If Marterer can avoid spraying errors, his all-court game can certainly wear down Bergs, and taking a set or two could very well be enough in slow conditions with longer points to see Bergs’ level drop.

Marterer is too strong to be blown off the court, has enough pace to dictate play himself and I trust him a bit more from a physical perspective in a longer format. Our Bergs vs Marterer bet is for Marterer to win.

Read on for more expert insights.

Zizou Bergs Recent Form

Though he’s undoubtedly in better form than his counterpart in this match, it hasn’t all been rosy for the 24-year-old. He’s 6-2 on European red clay but racked up quite a few wins against more natural hard-court players, lost a match he should’ve won against an aging Rafael Nadal, and needed Alejandro Tabilo to fall apart last match to reach this stage.

There’s no doubt he should be the favorite here, but to make him a dominant favorite goes a bit far.

His game is well-rounded as he can play big, powerful tennis from the baseline, moves pretty well for his height, and is adept on return.

His decision-making, however, can be questionable at times and he’s been well-known over the years as injury-prone and someone who can fade in longer, more physical matches. As I mentioned above, that probably plays a big role in the fact that he’s never reached the third round at one of the four major tournaments, where one has to win an extra set to advance.

Maximilian Marterer Recent Form

With a win percentage of just 33%, there’s no way around how poor Marterer has been in 2024. After a relatively strong finish to 2023, it came as an even bigger disappointment when the losses started piling up.

The reason was fairly obvious, with the lefty having lost the plot from the forehand side. Even in matches where he found a decent level, he couldn’t close out the wins (Munich against Felix Auger Aliassime and Monte Carlo against Chris O’Connell come to mind). The positive spin here is that Marterer has looked a bit better of late.

He qualified in Rome, looking good in his win against Richard Gasquet. He was competitive enough before pulling out against Yannick Hanfmann at a Challenger 175 in Turin and then he didn’t just beat Jordan Thompson in the opening round but did so in ruthless fashion.

At the very least, he’s a talented player more likely to withstand the rigors of a longer match that has been showing some signs of improvement in recent weeks.

Bergs vs Marterer H2H – Stat of the Match

These two have played three times in the past, with each encounter coming back in the 2021 season. Bergs took the first two, with Marterer winning in U.S. Open qualifying later on in that season.
