Zhizhen Zhang vs Dusan Lajovic (Generali Open): Tuesday, August 1st

Clean stuff from Mackenzie McDonald as he did, indeed, avenge his loss from Queen’s Club against Diego Schwartzman on Monday in the American capital. We’ll take that win and move onto the action for Tuesday.

Our second ATP preview of the week though will come from the Generali Open, as we shift to focusing on clay-court tennis. Let’s look at Zhizhen Zhang vs Dusan Lajovic.

Zhizhen Zhang vs Dusan Lajovic Expert Tip

I would say I’m surprised to see that Lajovic isn’t the decided favourite in this matchup, but I’m not really all that shocked. The markets love Zhang and he’s lived off his improbable run in Madrid for a while now.

I’ll gladly take the better clay courter with a steadier game in Lajovic here, despite some recent struggles (though he’s looked better in recent weeks for my money) if you’re going to offer me nearly even money.

Read on for more expert insights.

  • Expert Tip: Lajovic to win at 1.98 with Pinnacle, using 3/10 stakes.

Zhizhen Zhang Recent Form

Zhang’s form has resembled his style of play in a way the past few months. If we take a look at his results on clay, he shocked the tennis world with a run to the quarterfinals in Madrid (played at altitude as well), beating the likes of Denis Shapovalov, Cameron Norrie and Taylor Fritz (though he was on the brink of elimination in that one). He also made the semis last week in Hamburg, before being summarily dismissed by Laslo Djere.

Then there have been some odd losses. He was beaten in Rome in qualifying by Francesco Maestrelli, and early in Gstaad as well, losing at the hands of young gun Hamad Medjedovic (another altitude event).

It does make some sense though, seeing as the professional from China plays a flashy game style, but one that doesn’t leave him much room for error. It’s a flat ball, aggressive style that one would think is more conducive to success on hard courts and on quicker surfaces.

Dusan Lajovic Recent Form

The Serbian will be glad to get back on clay. It’s Lajovic’s strength – as previously mentioned. Victory at Banja Luka back in April was the highlight of his year thus far – consecutive quarter final appearances in Buenos Aries and Rio back in February a aclose second.

More recently, things have fallen off for him. The much-needed win over Miomir Kecmanovic at Hamburg last week put an end to a run of four consecutive first-round exits.

Zhizhen Zhang vs Dusan Lajovic H2H – Stat of the Match

These two have only met once before in a competitive match. Zhang won at Roland Garros earlier in the year after Lajovic retired.

Odds as at am UK Time on August 1st, 2023. Odds may now differ.
