For our first preview of Thursday’s action, we’ll stick with the Koblenz Open on the ATP Challenger Tour, as we look at Giulio Zeppieri vs Mathys Erhard

Erhard’s win probability is only 28.5%, while Zeppieri is favoured to win at 1.31 odds. The handicap is four games and the total games line is 21.5.

Injuries haven’t been kind for the Italian lefty who was showing signs of potentially being ready to compete at a higher level in 2024, before having his season ended abruptly in June.

I was a little concerned about backing him last round as a big favourite against his countryman Federico Arnaboldi, given the fact that we’d seen him play just one match since that injury and it was a loss against Francesco Passaro in Australian Open qualifying. Now, he actually kept that one close and perhaps that was more indicative of his form than the actual result.

He swept Arnaboldi aside in the opening round here and now I’d say he has his most manageable test yet taking on the Frenchman who is a clay specialist, has no attacking game and is at best a high-end ITF Tour player or fringe Challenger Tour competitor.

I was hoping to see a -4.5 game handicap here, with my number at -5. To see an affordable -4 in the market has really surprised me.

WIth Zeppieri showing no signs of rust in the early goings of the season and Erhard off his best surface (though he should like the slower hard courts in Koblenz), I’m not sure why we aren’t being forced to go higher than the four games here.

Giulio Zeppieri Recent Form

I covered Zeppieri’s form above, with very little actual play on court to break down thanks to that break that has seen him play just two matches since June.

As I mentioned, he does seem to have come back without needing much time to get back up to speed, and he will be very disappointed with himself if he can’t move through to the quarterfinals in fairly quick fashion after beating a tougher clay court player in the first round. His ranking could certainly use as many points as it can get, with the injury absence costing him time to accrue points at the end of last year.

The main downside to this bet is Zeppieri can be frustratingly erratic (and against a solid baseliner, that can be detrimental), but his game is really promising and he’s easily clear of someone like Erhard. I think even considering the potential for unforced errors, you can’t bring this handicap below the 4.5-game threshold.

Mathys Erhard Recent Form

Without much clay tennis this time of year for Erhard, he’s started his season playing hard court tournaments. He hasn’t played anyone I’d rate above the ITF level and has still only managed to cobble together a 2-1 record, including one break of serve victories against Constantin Bittoun-Kouzmine and Vadym Ursu.

Erhard’s problem is that as consistent as he is, there is so little to his game in terms of firepower. That’s also important, because we’re giving up a four game head start, meaning we need a sort of dominant win from his opponent and in men’s tennis those can be tough to come by.

When a player doesn’t have much weaponry to work with and doesn’t have a particularly big serve, his games become more vulnerable and he’s prone to being broken. That’s exactly what we need in order to build a big lead and end up seeing that five to six game win we’re looking for here.

Giulio Zeppieri vs Mathys Erhard H2H – Stat of the Match

This is the first meeting between the two players. That’s almost telling in its own right, as it showcases in a way that Erhard struggles to get into the draws Zeppieri is often in to be drawn against him.
